On this day 224 years ago, September 9th 1798...

It was the day after the battle of Ballinamuck in Longford, just over the county boundary from Leitrim. The French forces led by General Humbert had surrendered to General Lake who had been following and harassing him all the way from Mayo, through Sligo and Leitrim before finally surrounding him and forcing the surrender.

Once the French were disarmed and detained, Lake then unleashed the Armagh Militia to deal with the Irish, regardless of whether they were wearing French uniforms or not. The executions of the Irish that were arrested began today, as well as the slaughter of hundreds who didn't get a chance to surrender but were instead chased through fields and bogs before being mostly bayoneted or clubbed to death with muskets. The bodies of over 500 Irish men, some of them rebels, many of them civilians, littered the fields and bogs around Ballinamuck while prisoners were taken from their cells in Leitrim, Roscommon and Sligo to be executed as well. Grim!

horrific!

On 9th of Sept 1585 Armand-Jean du Plessis was born. He was the inventor of the table knife. Appalled by the habit of picking teeth with sharp knifes,he ordered to get the blades dulled and the tips rounded to improve table manners. The design quickly became popular.

oh yeah btw he was also known as Cardinal Richelieu.

I remember it like it was yesterday..

Standing at the entrance to my Cave scratching my balls with bloody club in hand after single handedly battering a wee dinosaur..and my family were happily eating the raw meat. This was in the days before fire...

Alas I stood there thinking to myself

"This reincarnation shite is doing my head in"

If only I knew..if only I knew

Newry Down

The funerals took place in Tallaght of the three young people whose lives were so tragically cut short for unfathomable reasons, we will learn about in a few years at the trial in Dublin.

May they rest in peace, and their relatives come to terms with their loss.
