Ok just going to put this out there.

Why doesn't one of the energy companies lower there prices, witch would indices people to move to there energy at a lower rate.

Hence more people moving to there company, would mean more money for them and less for the higher rate companies.

It's not that simple. Gas is used to generate loads of the power we use in ireland, and the price of gas went up massively. That means it cost more to make the electricity so the price goes up. Electricity companies are private businesses and so have to return a profit for their shareholders.

The raw product is gas, gas produces the bulk of our electricity, russia has turned off the supply to Europe so whenever a commodity is in short supply the price dramatically increases, every "gas company" in Ireland is getting their supply from the same source at the same high price so they all have to charge customers similar prices, 1 company can't just drop their price drastically they would go out of business in a week..

Plus the price of energy from renewable sources such as wind farms are tied to the price of the most expensive unit, so energy from wind farms have shot up in price since they’re linked to gas

LoL , what percentage of there power is generated from wind turbines . Did the price of the wind go up aswell....

Well yes the price of wind did kinda go up. Electricity yield from wind is 6 or 8% down on the previous year (due to less wind blowing) so the money spent on wind generation is costing more this year. Also you NEED gas bought in case the wind doesn't blow... which does happen. The percentage of energy from wind is about 40% right now, but we will always need to use gas generation even if/when wind is massively scaled up. What we really need is offshore wind but that's 8 to 10 years away realistically, and even then we will still need gas to plug the gap.

Our energy supply will be low for the winter and there's a risk of blackout. High prices reduces consumption as well as the risk of blackout.

I'm most fortunate I spend my summers on the family bogs. It's fucking hard back breaking work but €200 will heat my house for the year. I wouldn't be able to afford oil coal etc.

Because the other companies would follow suit snd lower their prices. As is all the electricity and gas companies are making fantastic profits.

There's no need for them to get into a price war now when they can all just keep hiking their prices and making more and more additional profit.

There was no real drive or initiative for off shore. There was an experiment with 6 turbines on the Arklow bank and they left it at that, disgraceful really!

The future will be Hydrogen and that will require Fusion. Huge work being done on that in France and we really should be getting more involved in it.

We just need that generation of people that were scared shitless by Chernobyl to die off first!!

How would a cap work? Would the government pay the shortfall? Would the electricity supplier make a massive loss (and

potentially go out of business)?

When the cost of production increases and the price is capped then SOMEONE will have to carry the can at the end.

Putin says if Europe puts a cap on prices he will stop all Gas and oil exports so that means no electricity/heating no petrol or diesel, I think its best we do what he says but the top brass in Europe are so arrogant they would rather see their citizens suffer than to concede to him, Putin has Europe by the balls but it seems they would rather lose their own balls than do what he wants

Yes of course as soon as Europe lifts the sanctions imposed upon Russia for the invasion of Ukraine things will get back to normal but this isn't going to happen

Cause if you buy for 50c and sell for 30c that's a loss of 20c. There's companies don't like to make a loss. Believe it or not the ppl that own these companies, they like money for some reason, and they like making lots of it

I'm no fan of putin, but I believe in a suppliers right to set prices for what they produce and sell. Like I run a business and I have many suppliers. I can't turn around to them and tell the I have capped the price I'm paying for cardboard boxes this year. I'd be laughed out of the room. Likewise if a customer of mine told me they had decided to cap the price that I sell for then I wouldn't consider it. I just dont get why anyone in Europe thinks Putin would accept a cap on the price he sells his gas at. Even if we were best of friends, and let alone when he is fighting a proxy war with the EU in Ukrane.

I'm sure your neighbours would only love that. A big, dirty, black smoke spouting,loud ass noisy ,vibration clattering and banging generator going till all hours in the morning. I mean whatever about getting some solar panels and batteries installed but diesel generators ? That's just silly talk now

Just reading about the UK price cap.. its seems it is to be paid for by the government. They will be expanding renewables, permit fracking again, and give out more licenses for oil production. The cap is set at a high level so won't be making bill reductions, but more aiming to stop prices increasing further.
