SO YOU'RE A MODERN MAN?

Jump to newest

Loughlinstown

I'm just read a few articles about what the "modern man" is supposed to be like. In essence, this man is supposed to walk a fine line today of strength and determination wrapped neatly with meekness and humility

Other qualities cited for the 'modern man' included being affectionate, a leaning towards veganism being environmentally aware, taking pride in their appearance and standing up for a cause

------

So in light of all the above Fab men folk, how do you measure up to being "a modern man"?

Not too far off I guess.

Although it's a bit much to expect so many different variables off one person.

Interesting question.

There is huge money behind the vegan campaign, loads of highly processed crap, containing multiple ingredients, most of which would not be considered food if served on their own, all smartly packaged to pretend its saving the planet

Agreed. There's even a push towards veganism and "movies" spouting how a plant based diet is superior to a meat based one...

Case in point, in GAME CHANGERS, Nate Diaz (a vegan) beats Conor McG (a meat eater) proving the superiority of a plant based diet So going on a vegan diet trumps talent, drive and athletic ability

I think you can be a modern man without being like one of the happy pear lads

You don't need to be vegan, but it's good to have an awareness and an ethical idea of what you eat and how you live. Not just accepting the status quo and instead making your own conscious choices about what's right and wrong.

I don't think you need to be meek, but being in touch with the feminine side, while having the urge to protect and step up if necessary.

You don't need to be an eco warrior, but you aren't throwing your can out of the car window, and are doing your part within the constraints that you live within.

Modern masculinity isn't toxic masculinity, but a considered and considerate masculinity which doesn't need to punch down to feel strong.

I think for the most part it's about looking after your appearance of course not in a vain manner but more in just a upkeep of yourself if that's makes sense.

As for all the meekness stuff, I don't know if that is exactly a good thing.

But not being afraid to show emotion or talk about your feelings in a positive or negative way I think is something that could be considered "the modern man"

When is something no longer modern?

I don't follow trends. I am whoever and whatever I am and I'm the sum of my own personal life experiences.

For the record, I have no issues with anyone who chooses to eat a vegan diet!

I just thought it amusing that according to the Google search for modern man qualities, as pointed out, among the first 3 listed, veganism was one. Frankly, I think there are a lot more important qualities and attributes a man can have (modern or not) than how they choose to nourish themselves!

Now it's a study of 2000 people by Wilkinson Sword (if I remember correctly), so not exactly a huge cohort of opinions.

But working nicely in line with the current climate change topic - where the meat industry and farmers are slaughtered (excuse the pun)

In the last few years I have reduced my meat intake to 1 cow 1 pig and half a sheep. I voted for a gay guy in the local election last time out. I spend an extra 1 minute to trim my pubic hair to make sure it’s even. I invested in a proper set of wrenches and rarely use a vise grip and hammer any more. I’m even contemplating using a body wash instead of shampoo to wash my hairy chest in the shower. I nearly cried when Galway lost to limerick in the hurling. I’m going to read my first book anytime soon. I don’t think you can get more modern.

Modern man is highly likely to be a person who is astutely attuned to current issues of the day and is responsive to those issues, which other modern minded people are likely to be attracted to.

But modern men exist at different strata in disparate societies and in different cultures, so the concept of the modern man is not a one size fits all construct.

A modern man on Inismor on the Aran Islands is going to look very different from a modern man within an Indian family in, say, Leicestershire, but their receptiveness to changing social mores and cultural adaptation may have similarities.

The 'modern man' is naturally adaptable, flexible and responsive, within his own context.

Would I personally classify myself as a modern man?

I do try to be, but I probably have a number of 'blind spots' that I am unaware of; but by acknowledging my awareness of this, indicates my intention to strive to remain up-to-date!

I'm a Neanderthal then.

Barbecuing meat is one of my favourite things to do, as well as eating it. I have pronounced canines, from genetic hereditary design, that were not designed for eating much lettuce or tomatoes.

I Brew my own beer so have not a svelte figure but a fatter wallet to match my silhouette.

I do most of the cooking and the grass cutting.

Also pay for the roof over our heads, through working a hard but rewarding job.

I may not be the Google version of the modern man but I'm a damn sight happier in myself than I imagine that sad sack of shite is and I'm fairly sure that I have lived a much wilder and enjoyable life than he has.

Whilst mine might be a shorter life, as Ricky Gervais says, have you seen the majority of people who live longer and what their existence is? No thanks!

Happy to have done it properly

In my opinion, of course. Yes! Yours is just as valid

In an article called ARE YOU A MODERN MAN? ONLY 35% OF MEN SAY THEY ARE, Caroline Allen stated that researchers by Wilkinson Sword listed 50 signs of a "modern man" including

- Is conscious about the environment

- Can put up shelves

- Has a skincare regime

- Enjoys baking

- Happy to have a self-pamper night - face mask, bubble bath

- Is able to style his children's hair

- Meditates

- Drinks cocktails

- Does yoga

- Is a vegan

Now, you'd have to be James bleeding Bond to be anyway proficient in most of the above. I'm actually surprised they didn't include

"cries during sex (with himself)"

Granted, a few knuckle dragging troglodytes and testosterone fuelled alpha males walk amongst us and that's fine as we need some diversity. However, I think modern man should talk about things like mental health with his mates, respects the environment, is chatty and charming but calls out B.S when he sees it and has a backbone when one is needed

Stuff like this this I find ridiculous on any 'modern man' list. A modern man should have compassion and empathy, and that's pretty much it.

Outside of that he should be free to have whatever likes or interest he has without being judged for them. Men's mental health, especially young men, is a huge issue and shit like 'here's a list of 100 things you need to do to be a modern man to attract a women" are terrible f9r young men's mental health.

With the exception of the therapist you could actually be describing me and I'd have no bother speaking to one should the need arise! I'd add to that my old fashioned manners and if that makes me a "modern" man then great. If not,I couldn't give a shite! Take me as I am and we'll get on just fine. If anyone has issues with how I carry myself then they can get the boat!! One way ticket, preferably!!

What a load of bollocks to be fair. A man is who he chooses to be , your or anyone else preconceived idea of what a man or modern man is that your or their idea of what want in a man. Leanings towards veaginism??? The new fad diet of the tabloid masses, sorry now as someone who eats very little red meat and small amount of poultry and fish(isn't fish the flesh of an living creature).I would not say I have any leaning towards any diet , but I like beans as a quick easy way to mix up a curry while still packing in protein. Don't get me started on the craze of non dairy milk alternatives, unless for medical diet purposes then I understand. But those alternatives to dairy milk consume huge volumes of water to produce so not as environmentally friendly at all. The same for avocado on toast, the air miles clocked up by avocados to get on out plates is crazy. Sorry lil Monday rant over. As long as a man is respectful to others, tries to keep himself healthy why try and fit him into your idea of a modern man

Fads and labelling sells, that is the bottom line on any of it. It is another form of peer pressure trotted out in a continually evolving manner so that companies have markets for their new products. Journalists gobble it up and the wannabies follow blindly. It changes every year or 2. Just be happy and comfortable in your own skin with respect for others.
