Is it really unforgivable? I mean, if you understand the sentence, that’s all that really matters.

Before you correct someone on their spelling, consider that they may have dyslexia or may just be typing quickly while doing a million other things.

Spelling and punctuation really don't bother me at all. My own typos are atrocious. I just found it humorous.

I admittedly used to be a grammar nazi but now I'm more understanding of difficulties such as dyslexia.

However errors in printed papers/magazines absolutely grinds my gears, (I'm looking at you Irish Times, well not anymore!) There's no excuse when there's proofreaders and editors...

I think anyone with any cop on will always forgive anyone who makes general mistakes when it comes to spelling, regardless if they have a particular condition or not. I think what the OP is in about is the lazy kind who actually do not care about literacy standards.

I have worked voluntarily over the years in the literacy field, am qualified, and can tell you the real struggle of people trying to read and write from a first hand experience. It's devastating to their lives and great courage is taken when someone takes those first steps to want to improve their literacy skills.

In fairness to the OP here, he does have a valid point. Literacy is important enough to care about and calling out those who should know better is fine, as long as everyone is not tarred with the same brush. He is entitled to his rant or to be muffed at it. He did not point the finger at anyone in particular. He is entitled to raise the issue.

Literacy is person specific and specific to the person who may or may not have had the environment to develop a competent literacy skills set. Key phrase, skill set. It is acquired through learning.

At any given time in Ireland 50,000 people of all ages are completely, and I mean completely illiterate. Think about that. So a little kindness goes a long way. Some people may not even be aware that their own literacy may be lacking in some areas, and that's fine too. No one likes to be pulled up on failings of any sort.

This is a 1st world country on the index, but when it comes to certain areas, it is lacking; literacy being one of them. Not one of us is perfect in this area, and never will be.

It is upon all of us to raise our own literacy standards, and support those who have problems in this area.

If anyone finds they do not like a person because of literacy skills, then they have the problem, not they person who can't read or write. Sign up to the 2 year course in Waterford and gain insight. You might learn something about yourself in the process, otherwise politely decline the message received, delete, and move on.

Do not fall foul of attributing a lack of literacy skills to a particular type of person, as does often happen.

Literary tutors and clients do appreciate humour too, and it is used to relieve stress on all parties, so kudos to the melon/lemon joke there.

Wagging the finger at someone because they complain about lack of literacy skills,in the process admonishing them is by far worse. Those days are over and they have no authority to say what is right and what is wrong.

So I'll sign off with the passive/aggressive salutation of happy fabbing! ??

There is an increasing reliance on the autocorrect function within most systems, which cannot determine context, but merely correct words that have been misspelt, to similar sounding words.

One even sees examples of this in articles published in quality newspapers, such as The Irish Times.

As regards punctuation, some of the profiles on this site are just wholly unappealing large blocks of text with no punctuation, nor any capital letters.

You’re right, there is a lot of spelling mistakes on the forum, and for a variety of reasons, it doesn’t really bother me as long as I can understand what people are saying, I don’t judge people on their typing, spelling or grammar here.

The posts above show, perhaps with the exception of people with dyslexia, that even words or sentences that haven’t been spelt or constructed correctly can still by and large be understood.

I don’t think people should be judged on it, except for text speak, they’re just lazy fuckers…..

I have worked with the public and the struggle is real for those who have issues with number, letter and IT.

I'm thinking the point here though wasn't directed at those who have those challenges but rather those who could do better proof-reading as a first impression or after. Using it as a way to judge interest and effort...

I'm too quick to click & send in normal chat, auto correct or tiny keys get me all the time, my head two words ahead and giggling at the funnies in play. Doesn't mean any disrespect to the posters.

As ocd as the next, and seeing it frozen in the thread can make me cringe but it's my issue

Probably not the most reliable judge of interest but it can be a judge of how good a match you are if it's heavy on text speak or lingo and you're not okay with that

This is what the first post says when spelt correctly, again, this may be quite different for anyone with dyslexia and is certainly not meant as any sort of judgement.

The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without a problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter my itself, but the word as a whole.”

I don't expect everyone I meet to be an English scholar. Typos happen. Sometimes people don't know how to spell a word or they aren't fully focused. It's not the end of the world.

For me, it's more important to structure your thoughts. A good rule of thumb is to have 15-20 words per sentence and about 3 sentences per paragraph. Try to keep everything short and simple for your reader. They'll appreciate it and you'll look infinitely smarter
