The Good Morning greetings often start at 5.30am and by 7am there could be more than 20!!

How much sleep are the greeters getting? When do you go to sleep? Hardly getting your eight hours....

I usually get 6 - 6.5 hrs. 8 hours would be a super treat, and probably only happen twice or three times a year. I would love to have better sleep so I’m doing my best to improve it.

I get up every morning at 5.30 even at weekends and holidays. Can't remember the last time I was still in bed after 6. I average less than 4 hours sleep a night.

Thatcher famously only slept for four hours every night.

That has to be the best advertisement for the importance of eight hours sleep every night.

I have a feeling that phones are the major reason for many people's poor sleep patterns.

I'm a night owl by nature so will often be up late, but I have one here who wakes at 6ish as a lie-in so I am woken early no matter if it's a work day or not

9am is a major lie-in lol

The dreaded broken sleep cycle of a super-busy, stressed out, 'head's full of lists' stage can see me wide awake at 3 or 4 am

And I always find domestic dramas soooo good for my sleep, don't you? Lol

A spin on my phone can actually empty my head enough to get back to sleep so you may catch me on here at odd times

I normally get 7/8 hours unbroken sleep. Did suffer from insomnia years ago due to work pressure and started taking the hormone melatonin then and which I still take.

Same. It’s absolutely infuriating. I badly need more sleep but it’s elusive. Rx

Newry Down

The need for sleep is on a continuum-a sliding scale-and varies from person to person based on a number of factors.

Nowadays in modern, lighted industrialised societies, most people are not getting enough sleep, especially teenagers, because of their addiction to social media.

Sleep is an exceptionally important part of life, but most do not devote enough time to optimising their sleep environments and how their sleeping time is structured and managed.

Finally, when compared with 500 plus years ago most people sleep very differently; in times past a solid block of sleeping was not the norm and waking in the muddle of the night was accepted.

To get a good period of quality restful REM sleep your room should be dark, totally dark, cool, with lots of ventilation, no external noise and with no visible modern technology.

Most people also sleep too warm and without enough time between the last food and drink, and bedtime.

There is a lot of science relating to sleep, but adjusting your own sleep is an artform, with lots of trial and error.

Sleep is almost as important as the air you breathe and the food you eat. Anyone getting less than 7 hours a night should be addressing it imo

Broadly, I would concur but the quality and depth of your sleep period is vitally important.

Many people sleep fitfully nowadays principally due to an insufficiently dark environment that is detected by everyone's Pineal Gland, that regulates the production of melatonin, a powerful chemical.

I get around 7 on average, sometimes 5 or 6 and yes 8 is my happy happy place but i just don't always get it. But if I don't get what I need I will take an hour later in the day/evening if I must.

I recently bought an analog clock that only tells time and has alarm. I leave my phone outside bedroom and read. I instantly feel relaxed and reading a physical book has me asleep in 30 minutes or less. The experts are correct.

I agree.

My sleep quality deteriorated exponentially when I had to start keeping my phone within a few feet of me 24/7

I remember once reading that there was a crystal that could help!! God knows what it was tho.

Crystals are quackery and devoid of any positive or scientifically verifiable beneficial effect.

They are in the same territory as homeopathy.
