In a GAA game the weekend where a transgender (man now recognising as a female) played a ladies Gaelic football match and manager of opposition team complained. Is it time we create events for only transgender people in sports and all forms of life?

So a woman is a phantom, an apparition, a fading ornament; and a shape that can dance with a gay image - I feel like a ghost now

I would generally be very progressive in my opinions... but trans women who had the benefit of testosterone in her body for a period in her life can have big physical benefits in terms of size and strength over a woman who hasnt. It doesnt seem fair to me. I can understand why the opposing team complained.

They were whinging, because they were shoite, no?

If they'd win, they will be all gung-ho about equal opportunities and equality of sexes and what-not.

It is a debate, but not on the local level, if it's cool with, not-so-progressive, GAA capis, it must be fine, so. Or what?

I've seen the whatapp videos and the transperson mentioned is very obviously a "former" biological man just that he/she identified as a woman.

Im sure if it was a petite little Asian TS or CD she wouldn't have been noticed

Its a far from straight forward area. Heard an interview from Una May from sports ireland give an interview yestetday. The went oit to tender to get advive on funding this area.....they got no expressions of intetest.

I believe the player in question had a huge game and score which is hardly fair either....but still needs to be accomodated somewhere.

Will be very difficult for gaa to sort i feel as very complex issue

it’s an issue across most sports. You have a person born a man, now wanting to be a female competing in female events. Men are naturally stronger then women, it’s a complete unfair advantage in relation to the other competitors.

It's a difficult one to deal with as there are many aspects to think of and many many outcomes.

In sports were a physical advantage could be a danger to the other competitors I don't believe it should be allowed, as in combat sports. I also am undecided on individual sports as living as a man and building more muscle and denser bone mass might create an uneven playing field.

Unfortunately even cis women with high testosterone levels are being scrutinized in high level sports (800m comes to mind).

It will be debated for some time , in the case mentioned, GAA, I hardly doubt it would make that much difference and it must have been very difficult for the lady to begin with, considering how the GAA can be in towns in Ireland. The issue needs more debate and one size doesn't fit all.

Not "now wanting to be a female"...if only it were that simple.

Also people don't just transition M to F and there are those who might be disadvantaged in their sporting endeavours.

But it is complex, I agree, and as a society I think we're a long way off handling the situation with the dignity and respect that's required.

I think the only option is to have a transgender category in sports and even a league in team events.

Perhaps teams that want to field transpeople should only be allowed in certain competitions.

Maybe a trans cup or something?

Women fought long and hard for equality in sports, including GAA, too… still fighting even. I don’t believe the poor girl marking the player in question (2-09 from play) was feeling the warm glow of equality after losing that final.

In our opinion we’d be wrong to discard feminism as a passé cause that has achieved all of its goals when mulling over this conundrum… and it is an unfortunate and difficult clash, even flashpoint, of progressive / liberal thought.

Very difficult one, but has to be addressed so that everyone can enjoy the sport, and fairly. Maybe impossible to satisfy everyone in that regard.

The science would appear to say that once a boy has gone through puberty he gets the physiological advantages of being a man.

The biggest issue is really the lack of numbers to create a third (or even third and fourth) category for trans athletes.
