Sabina's Ukraine war letter!

The president, Michael D is not a monarchical figure, bound by, encompassed within and restricted by regal protocols; his wife, Sabina appears to be an intelligent individual and is therefore entitled to have opinions about world events and to express them openly. She is not Michael D's personal property.

Should she have kept her views on the current War between Russia and Ukraine to herself?

Do people really care about this letter and her opinion?

How about we worry about the fact we have over 10000 homeless of our own, we are now looking to convert empty garda stations and barracks into suitable accommodation for refugees, sure feck it let's send some them out to Cape clear.

Fair play to her , she is calling for peace .

Zelensky is too busy doing a photoshoot with Vogue magazine to engage in peace talks......

Nothing good has ever come out of war, no difference with this one. There will be no winners in the end and the longer it goes on the more destruction, sorrow, pain, hate, death etc. there will be on both sides.

We have freedom of speech, she's no official person imo so I think she's absolutely entitled to express her opinion and her pledge/suggestion to end the war by a ceasefire and negotiations. Fair sake to her to call out for peace, it surely might not be as simple but it's certainly better than fueling the war mongering machine.

The West

She is perfectly entitled to express her views. She's is entitled to use her personal platform and name to call for peace.

The issue that some have is that she published her letter on a state media platform. Probably an error on her/their behalf, and really seems to overshadow her message!

War ??? this is not a war but an invasion I agree that mr Zelensky is an actor by profession but these are just ordinary people like us that have parents kids and pets that want too live in peace and get on with their lives just imagine leaving your home and leaving your wife or husband at home and going too a place that you can’t understand what people are saying and you have too bring your kids too school and constantly thinking is your husband or wife dead or alive horrible and by the way what happens in this country we all are guilty of that coz we let it happen not with a sword but by pen

I just read the letter which incidentally was not easy to track down.

She's 100% correct in everything she said in my view.

Strange the way the media haven't bothered to reprint this letter if there's something so wrong with it isn't it.

Might be something to do with Michael D's comments about the failure of successive governments to deal with homelessness methinks

When the Russian ambassador welcomes your comments it’s a bad sign.

Some of the comments show how effective Russian propaganda has been. There is an element of pro Russian, Anti UK, anti Nato and anti US sentiment, a hang over from the cold war. Russia has become a fascist state, is the aggressor and is not looking to negotiate.

Based on that any commentary that suggests that Ukraine should negotiate is pro Russian.

The only way there can be peace is if Ukraine wins or Putan dies of old age or sickness or if his own people end his regime.

Putin is not interested in peace talks. He wants territory and as we have seen will stop at nothing to get it.

She is more than entitled to her own independent opinion.

And the criticism of her not condemning Russia when calling for peace is wrong also as she clearly had already done that previously.

The issue I'd have with it is that it appeared on the presidential website I don't think her personal letters belong on that.

She's had a separate section on the website for her own issues for the last eight years so you had to go into her section to find it.

I didn't realise that tbh. Showd the interest most of us would of had in that website before the story.

I still don't think it was an appropriate place for her to publish that letter though

I like it how the west is suddenly pro-ukraine when in 2014 they were completely indifferent and trying to force a compromise that would allow for the carving up of a country.

The reality is, no one would give a damn if this was wasn't happening on Europe's back door. The main reason they are concerned now is because of the potential for oil and gas imports being blocked off!

There were no sanctions after the first land grab in 2014, this allowed Putin time to untangle Russian banks from the ECB system to allow for greater flexibility.

No one would give a damn if this was being fought in what is deemed to be a "third world nation" or in other parts of the Middle East e.g. Yeman where the proxy wars wage and innocent civilians are the biggest casualties.

The mistake was publishing it in an official section of the President's website.

As a private citizen, she is free to make those statements but as the wife of an elected citizen in public office, it becomes a headtfor the PC brigade

South Side.

I agree with the thrust of her letter, and i could have written this myself last February, as i felt the same then. All wars end at the peace table, and there are winners and losers in war, politics and at the peace table. I think from a diplomacy point of view , she shouldn't have put it on the President's website. But then again, whats wrong with dissent, it will foster discussion, and while we're talking were not killing people. Thats always a good thing.

Many people discuss this topic from a place of emotion, and that clouds your decision making. Remember, in war there are no good guys. Both sides are capable of killing torturing, destroying lives, etc. Overall, whatever her intention was, I support what she did .

Just that I'd say the vast majority of people haven't. Seeing as it's hidden by an Irish Times paywall.

I guarantee if she actually expressed pro Russian and anti Ukrainian views it would be reprinted and plastered all over the front page of every newspaper in the country.

All the papers have done is give us snippets of what she said in between their own agendas

Why not reprint it and let everyone make up their own minds?

Other than being factually wrong about how the 1916 rising and the civil war ended, as well as the nationality of Gustav Holst, there's not much objectionable about her letter. Pragmatism can be seen as offensive in times of war though.

Sabrina's letter perfectly illustrates Oscar Wilde's quotation:

The principal problem is that NATO and most other western European nations do not fully understand what Putin is really about; he is essentially an archetypal imperialist who wants to restore the former soviet union, and the previous Russian Tsarist empire.

The dependence on Russian gas has been a strategic error that Europe has walked into, naively!

If Putin succeeds in subjugating Ukraine, the next move will be into the Baltic States of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.

If he succeeds there Finland and Sweden will his next targets.

I'm not sure if you read the letter but I suspect you didn't as you appear to have a mistaken impression of what was in it. Also, I don't think Sabina and Michael D have ever been accused of being pacifists before.
