An unfortunate lady, 66, has been scammed out a vast sum of money by three romance fraudsters.

Has anyone been the victim of an attempted romance scam?

A friend of mine fell, hook line an sinker, for a hard luck story from a lady from outside this country: eastern Europe. He lost all of his life savings: everything!

Decades ago I was the victim of a romance scam that was amateurish; I played along for the whole experience and lost about £300 (three hundred).

What would you be willing to admit to?

While I haven't been myself I can see how people get sucked in quickly. I came across plenty fraudsters on Kik. The level of sophistication is quite astounding to the level of hacking a guys webcam and overlay his voice with the fraudsters. You can see how it could happen.

My mother was. Was a year or two after my father passed and she was lonely and ignored the warning signs. Like any scam, he was just lucky with his timing.

Think she lost close to 40k. Still technically under investigation but he avoided charges because he had a hard luck story and his daughter pleaded for leniency. He is playing it back on monthly instalments, and will avoid prosecution if he maintains the payments. However, it’ll be over a decade for her to recover the money.

The other option was to press criminal charges but then she would not have gotten anything and there would have been no guarantee of meaningful jail time.

That's why I said on a thread here abt showing face pics it's so dangerous,I don't know they do nor want.. just need to be careful

Thanks kindly. Actually didn’t hear too much about it until after it became a real issue. She kept it hidden from the family which is probably pretty standard until she couldn’t ignore it or bluff herself about his real intentions.

Very frustrating but any sort of physical involvement would have meant I risked her financial recovery prospects. Main thing is that she is happy with a nice guy now and has a chance at getting some of her money back slowly.

Know one that gets swindled out of money every few weeks or month. He just falls in love online to quick and wont listen to anyone. It's a few hundred cash to buying online vouchers.

Thank god no amd never knew of any friends either but have seen plenty of online stories (tinder swindler) . One time i had a guy try on pof but i knew it was dodgy so just blocked and reported him.

I can imagine. Must be very tough for someone who has been scammed to accept it has happened and admitt it.

By the sound of it she had a very positive ending. I doubt many people ever see any of the money again so glad it has worked out for her on both fronts.

Nearly a victim, was American based out in Turkey. He wanted me to write to his superior officer saying was his fiancé and wanted to see him. I said couldn't do it as it would be a lie and I'm a honest person. I had also been in Turkey so asked about places I had seen.

But friend was being scamed out of money nearly 1000 euros. But talked sense to her.

A family member was caught out 25 years ago. It was part of a much wider scam involving an unaware bank manager and solicitor as well as numerous businesses.

It was funded by his life savings and she cleaned him out.

In all the deals and property scams totalled well over £900k but actual losses were between £60-£70k.

The only mistake she made was name dropping people that I actually knew and it didn't add up so I was able to take the info she had given and followed the money before involving the police.

She was never prosecuted because despite being in her mid 30s was a ward of her parents due to previous mental health issues.

None of the losses were ever recovered.

I might be thick, but why would one send money somewhere they've never been to someone they've never met?

Sure we all are supermodels online, but a bit of common sense is needed when using tinternet.

Yep, I've been scammed for about 150 yoyos in two instances of 'online-shop' fraud over the years, but that's different matter altogether.

Or what am I missing?

There is one in the Midlands that I'm currently aware of where people were recorded and then large cash amounts were demanded.

Not really a scam but a definite extortion.

It really makes you wonder especially when organising meets
