Sorry to hear that you got sad news. It's just such a horrible disease. Finally had mine recently, I will admit late due to covid. Was due during one of the lockdowns and finally got around to organising it! Good on you to remind everyone, stay safe peeps!

The damage done by these cervicalcheck errors hasn't been fullly seen yet. It's being saved up in thr form of undiagnosed cancers. Lots more will die. Please go ladies!

Sorry to hear about your friend Red .I had mine recently. It is important that women do go when they get the letter. I know a few women in work who won't go as it's too embarrassing they say.

I used to know someone who had never been tested and she was in her mid 40s. Her friends all told her she needed to go but she always had an excuse.

I assumed it was out of embarrassment but she admitted it was the fear of finding something. I asked was she not more afraid of finding something too late and she told me I was a man and could never understand so I never asked again.

I've no idea if she has ever been since.

my mother wa 36 and diagnosed with cervical cancer after a clear smear the year before. Full hysterectomy but left her ovaries, she had treatment cheno and radiotherapy which lead on to more operations due to complications was given all clear sadly the ovaries turned cancerous when she was 59 lost my mum when she was just turned 60.

The importance of a smear is so important it's over in seconds.

Just going to ask to help me understand

Is it painful to get done

I do remember that my then girlfriend used to plan our visit to The family planning clinic to get the pill every six months during her period so she didn't have to have a smear test to save on the pain.

Is it still the same or has the procedure improved for women

It very much depends person to person. Its always uncomfortable but not always painful.

It depends on your physiology, I have a cervix that is hard to reach so has to be pulled upwards for access, I also have scarring due to traumatic childbirth and previous surgery, all of this means I'm already tense before it even starts. Once I had a vasovagal reaction and fainted as soon as my cervix was touched. I dread smear tests but they're a necessary evil. To avoid them is foolish in my book

Gosh that's sad you had a bad experience and so risky not going back...maybe trying somewhere different where they are more experienced and let them know about your previous experience beforehand so they are extra gentle would be the way to go. I had my coil replaced on the same day, the smear was simple, painless and quick, now the coil being inserted was a different ballgame but that's a different procedure. Smears are generally painless (I know some have different problems) and so important in the long run xxx

It depends on you physically and the person doing it and how patient and experienced.they are. I've had some that have been just a bit uncomfortable and others that have hurt quite a bit. But I still think it's better to get them done than not.

Personally, I prefer a smear test to going to the dentist

I remember going for a smear test in my early 20s in Germany - they're extra diligent, not only did they take a vaginal smear but also an anal one

It’s uncomfortable rather than painful. You wouldn’t choose to get it done, but the alternative isn’t amazing

IUD placements are fucking horrendous. I refused one for years and opted for a Tubal Ligation instead.

My type of coil is a 3 year type so I get that replaced and my smear done in the same appointment. Not a pleasant day but better having it done than not. I have 2 close friends that have had issues. 1 is battling cancer and another has had abnormal cells a few times.

I work in this area, I have a family member who refuses to get a smear test as she is too Embarrassed to show her vagina. She rather die than get it done was her reply!!! Same answer for a breast check ,she is 60.

Sorry for your loss op, got called back recently for a 2nd smear. Have to say as I've got older I'm more comfortable getting them done. I think the nurses are a lot more aware of making us more relaxed getting them done.

My smears are now yearly due to finding pre-cancerous cells in my cervix, for the second time in 4 years. I’m lucky though, I’m having procedures to remove the cells, so without a smear I’d be fighting cervical cancer.

Ladies get it done. Better to be uncomfortable for a minute than in severe pain until the inevitable…

OP I’m so sorry for your loss xx

I was having yearly smears from age 21 till last year (before they changed to over 25) due to irregular cells and now every 3 years. I’d never miss it and let’s face it… our bits are here for the world to see, why not spread them for the doctor and get a smear?

I think we should have a fab smear campaign lol- post your slogans here
