Yes Ten was just amazing and still stands up today, along with their MTV Acoustic performance of same, which was stunning. Someday I will find the cassette tape of their live performance which blew both of these out of the water! I never heard singing with more emotion and range in all my life. I'll let ye know if I do
Have to mention a few others:
Deepest Purple as it was the first time I ever heard heavy rock and was life changing.
Powerage by AC/DC for pure brilliance, best ever album (studio)
Kill Em All by Metallica for being a breath of fresh air at the time and showing me how to headbang like a lunatic and vent in a positive manner without hurting anyone.
U2 Under a Blood Red Sky/Wide Awake in America/Joshua Tree because, in order, an Irish band played there and did it so well, Bad, amazing collection of songs that, when I saw them performed live, made me realise that there was more to this band than I ever gave them credit for. Yes, Joshua Tree got me appreciative of U2.
Moist - Silver. Unreal vocal and kick ass tunes.
Screaming Trees - Sweet Oblivion. Album that I loved and Mark Lanegan was real on. Just excellent. They fucked around for 4yrs and never got it back, in my opinion, unfortunately.
The Frames - Set List. Because it's them live and you will never understand The Frames until you see them live!
You hear the passion, the obvious punk/metal/Irish trad influences that doesn't always come across on the studio albums, the musical understanding of the classic tunes, the crowd. If you haven't been to a Frames/Glen Hansard gig, you haven't lived a full life, trust me
Mick Flannery - White Lies. Probably his most accessible album but I love them all. Gravel voice, great guitar and piano and a sound lad from Cork. Our own personal blues master. To not know him is to lead a less fulfilled life
One of my greatest ever wishes has happened already! I've seen Eddie Vedder and Glen Hansard gig together. If they ever add Mick Flannery to that line up, I'll die a happy man
Here's hoping and sorry for waxing lyrical but, you know that I can an I do hope, in all sincerity, I've helped broaden your musical horizons
Damn! Too late to mention Faithless, Florence and The Machine, Rudimental, Ellie Goulding and others you wouldn't expect from me |
