Announced today...a grant of 600 euro towards the cost of installing a car charging point at your house even if you dont own an electric car

I've applied but can anyone tell me how much they paid if they have one ....and are there different types....or are they standard connections but the other end of the lead changes depending on your car

Looking into it ATM Bog, they range from €750 -€1,500. As fat as I can tell there are two types of cable type 1 &2 with most of the more modern cars being type two. Unless you have three phase power they charge at the same rate of 8-11kw per hour. Only difference seems to be the functionality of the unit, some will turn off for instance if somebody in the house turns on the electric shower, others you can set to charge during certain times like only using night rates. Some have screens and so on, I haven't decided what car to buy yet but as far as I know t all the cars or chargers have an app for controlling the charging.

Gotta warm up before the race starts. They will be a standard component to houses soon too so no harm in getting it fitted especially with the grant available.

A lot of variables in the cost depends on the size of the esb supply you have coming into the house some are only 8kva some 12ka ideally you need a 16kva depending on if you have air to water heating. You might have to get the esb supply upgraded that can cost upto 3500 euro on its own . That is for the fast charger point . We have included them in a few house renovations we recently did . The slower charging ones don't use as much power as fast so may not have to upgrade the supply for them . Hope this helps

Worth checking if you can get the a charging point fitted in the first place. I know of 2 people in Waterford that went off and bought electric cars in the past year only to find out that because they live in a terraced house with no private parking that they can't fit a charging point.

I know someone who ordered a full ev a year ago and are still waiting on delivery. The dealers installed a charging point for them 6 weeks after they placed their order but haven't responded to any calls or correspondence since despite taking a deposit.

They ordered a different car from another company and it was delivered within 5 weeks.

They are now trying to get the deposit back and so far the cost of the charging point hasn't been mentioned.

Very ambitious a 100.000 EV cars on the road a year by 2030 ....current is 60.000 EV on the road in ireland

The cars aint cheap and there is a problems with delivery of said cars as someone mentioned already...

The price if diesel is here to stay as a deterent and motivator me thinks

Beat advice get a electrician out to see what the esb tails are

To get the grant - has any other things to be done in the house getting it bonded - get a earth rod fitted to the house

The electrics should be good enough

There's a new type of smart charger coming out in september so I'll wait for one of them

I've already looked up a list of registered electricians that specialise in chargers

Just my 2 cents on this subject as I have studied it immensely. I believe we are on a fast road to electric cars (excuse the pun) and although it is a reasonable assessment that we need to go green and all that but the nuts and bolts of it is we do not have the supply grid to facilitate it presently but what if they brought in "Nuclear energy" which has now been passed as green or clean energy (baffled as to how it could be with such a slow decay rate approx 3k years for waste to disappear) but it feels to me it is the only viable solution. Wind and solar and all those concepts are good but its worth looking into the energy used along with minerals and materials used and thats not even getting into the waste that it causes. It for me feels like we will be setting ourselves up for a bigger problem in the future along with pigeon holing ourselves to the electrical grid and will be at there mercy..

Actually agree with cowboy about Nuclear power being the way to go

If they keep building data centers in Ireland they'll have all the electricity in the winter ...the rest of us will face power cuts

We have a typical Irish solution...we don't want a Nuclear power station but we connect to The UK and France and buy their electricity which is partly generated by Nuclear power

Same applies to a steadily increasing share of electric cars. Where's the electricity coming from? And how's it produced? How do we cover a steadily increasing demand of electricity in the future?

Isn't it funny how the EU all of a sudden declares natural gas and nuclear as 'green'. Just change the label, as easy as that and problem solved. Nuclear is clean but costly until something goes wrong and when it goes wrong it gets very very dirty and deadly. And it went wrong in a few places...

Over 50% of Ireland's electricity is generated by gas. Natural gas releases only half as much CO2 as coal, but it still has about the same CO2 emissions as diesel or heating oil. Additionally natural gas production often sets Methane free. Now considering that there's an engergy loss when producing electricity with gas, there's a very good chance your electric car's hidden CO2 emissions is higher than the one of a diesel car (if your car is run by electricity that's generated by gas).

The only way to go is energy from renewable sources.

So yeah brilliant idea of pushing grands for electric chargers.

It's a thing but still very expensive. Around £10 a litre at the minute I think. A lot of the major manufacturers are testing different options including hydrogen and synthetic fuels so the price will drop drastically in time

ESB have being saying for a long time now that we don't have any where near the capacity or infrastructure for the country to move to electric yet. Neither them or the government have done anything to fix that rather large hole in the move to green living yet.

"carbon footprint", Is a marketing term invented by BP after the huge oil spill they had.

It was meant to pass blame for the pollution of the planet away from them and onto the individual. To share blame away from them and onto electric, coal, gas and not just oil.

They even invented the calculators.

Your pollution footprint is so small in Ireland that you cant change anything. You cant undo even a portion of the pollution BP caused over your whole life. Most of you cant even undo the pollution caused by Bono flying a hat first class on a seat of its own, or conor flying a private jet to rome to have a christening.

Never mind the mind boggling destruction that huge companies like BP cause looking for oil. Or the way areas are being ripped apart to look for lithium.

The world needs corporate responsibility for pollution, not individual accountability. You need to be taxed 23% on a purchase of petrol, while the company who sold it to you and ripped the world apart getting it pays umm, 12.5%? and makes record profits? while polluting more and more to cut costs?

Anyway we need to move from oil and gas, because we need to move away from Russia/Arabs. The tiny saving of pollution that would come with that, is just kind of a nice way to have a bit cleaner air around your house I guess, but not gonna save the world.

Anyone who invests in an EV or a charging point will regret it in a few years, it will be the biggest waste of money ever, by all means spend your hard earned money on whatever you want but this electric vehicle fad will turn out to be one of the greatest cons ever just like covid was, I'd sooner spend and extra 30 euro a week on diesel than a small fortune on a EV and charging point, ask yourself how will all this electricity be generated and the answer is through the burning of fossil fuels at power plants so zero emissions is actually higher emissions than a diesel when you take into account that precious metals will need to be mined in Russia to produce all these batteries as well, as a matter of fact Russia says they will halt the mining of these metals if the revenue they receive from oil diminishes so it will never get of the ground, save yourself and don't buy 1 of these idiot mobiles and their appendages, its worth paying extra for diesel and petrol, penny wise but pound foolish

EVs are coming to take over whether we like it or not. There is a reason why pretty much every car company in the world has invested heavily into the technology. I am not swayed to drive one until the range matches that of my current petrol car, the electricity used to power an EV is green and finally, the length of time it takes to charge is no longer than it takes to currently fill a car at a petrol station.

There is a company called NIO who are developing an interchangeable battery which will be a game changer if they get that right. The end of life for the batteries needs to be sorted out too. As it stands they are as recyclable as a Trabbie.

On a different note, I remember thinking myself that we were completely overreacting to Covid but my mother would have found the strength to slap me in the face a few times if I told her Covid was a con in her final hours as I watched her passing away. She would have somehow used a big frozen trout too to hammer me with

Watching her die made me realise it wasn't a man like me, a healthy guy in his 40's we were protecting with all the restrictions, it was people like her.....each to their own and all that though.....we all have our truths

To be honest..the electric car is a fad and wont work at reducing emmissions..most of the electricity we produce here in Ireland is made by burning coal or oil..so whats the difrence in burning petrol /diesel in your car...also the fact that these batteries need to be very big and contain materials only found deep in the earth that need to be mined..in my eyes it will never work until we solve the battery problem....alternitive to this is burning a clean fuel, hydrogen. If we can produce an engine that seprates the elements found in water H2O, 2x Hydrogen and 1x oxygen, we have a clean fuel source.

I just want to say I think ev are perfect for city & town living...Not much good for a farmer pulling trailers of cattle around... Also cutting out rain forests in the Philippines to reach the minerals needed for the batteries which go from there to Japan onto the USA then back to Europe...ive heard some cars have up to 26 batteries & none are recycled..i think I'll stay with my diesel for the time being..

Tesla is scaling up it's battery factories. These and others Gigafactories apart from the 'hidden' environmental pillaging it is not even sustainable. With known lithium “resources” at 39.5 million tons, we get about 50 years of supply with the planned 100 Gigafactories, its not exactly a viable long-term solution.

The elephant(s) in the room in this debate are China and India and the rest of the developing world. China’s population of 1.3 billion already has about half the number of cars as the U.S

There is a race around the world trying to find new sources of lithium, copper and colbalt. Currently the largest supplier of these is from unregulated mines in DRC where workers are paid 30p/hr for 15hr days. If a worker takes a day off for whatever reason their working day pay is subsequently reduced.

Imo the answer lies not in ev at all, the cost, waste and disposal of the combustion vehicles is another white elephant being ignore, but in finding an viable environmental cost effective way of producing a lab alternative to petrol or diesel.

The answer is Iron Oxide. Rust.

One of the most abundant materials on the planet.

When you burn Iron/Iron Oxide dust you get - zero co2, none. You end up with a waste powder/dust that you collect. This powder can be processed back into Iron oxide using green electricity like solar/wind. So instead of connecting a wind plant to the grid you deliver "used iron oxide" in a green powered truck for it to be processed back into fuel.

Your car will only ever need the amount of powder it was delivered with. If it comes with 10kg of powder in the tanks, You only need 10kg to swap it with it never needs any more powder dug up. You swap it in a loop forever.

How does burning a powder turn into forward motion in a car, combustion engine? no. You use chips that turn heat directly into electricty. So you surround the flames with what are like solar panels, but they dont work on sun, they work on heat. You then use efficent electric motors to move the car.

You then put stores of iron powder in the same places petrol stations are, and everything is complete. You could even add solar panels allowing them to directly convert wasted powder back into useable temselves. Handy for stations in the middle of nowhere who get 5-6 cars a day.

These heat energy chips are 40% efficent right now, so its not amazing. But it would improve and we can do it right now.

Just imagine I put one of these units in your house. 40% of the heat goes to electricity, 60% to heat your house. Once a month the powder is replaced, old powder taken away. The cost of the powder is the price of the clean wave/solar/wind energy + transport in a green truck.

All of a sudden we are off oil, off gas and our bills are cheap, and not just cheap but steady excluded from external factors like war etc.

And you have an industry full of jobs, delivery, wind, solar, collections etc etc.

All I know is people getting electric charge points for electric cars they dont have is probably more hurtful for the enviroment than anything I will do for the next 10 years.

If you google stuff outside of what the green party pushes on us, you will soon find that there are really great solutions (google iron as a power source seriously even nasa loves the idea) you will come to the conclusion that battery cars are such a hurtful thing for the world, as they are pushing back all these other amazing techs, just cause elon musk wants to be rich. You will even find out everyone from bmw to toyota were working on greener batteries and couldnt wait anymore because of tesla. There are even other clean burning powders for countries who dont have much iron, maybe they have other things that can be burnt clean as powders.

I just love the idea of countries like Poland/Germany/Norway/Czehia using iron powder, and heating their homes, apartment blocks with the waste heat that wasnt turned into electricity.
