Before the 2nd lockdown i prposed this idea, and from what I can recall this seemed like something that might be quite popular as it is mid way between Dublin and Belfast and would be accessible to both. I have re-made this thread to carry on that subject, and now other events and meets are commencing, wonderd if the intrest is still there and what imput and idea you guys have

Belfast, or some of the hotels on the outskirts of Belfast, such as Lisburn would be much better.

Newry is too parochial a town or now a city, although theoretically it would purport to be an ideal location because of its approximate equidistance from both Belfast and Dublin.

To be fair, there was a social organised in newry about 5-6 years ago and people are still talking about it, not in a nice way. It was this huge sensation, shock and anger from locals (know a lot of people there as spent almost a decade living there).

This is precisely what I alluding to; although I am not from Newry, and spend little time here, I have lived here for a very long time and know precisely how a swingers' event would talked about and potentially disrupted or sabotaged.

The folks in Belfast, or its environs have a more mature attitude, and anonymity is an issue.

Social mores are changing in Ireland but you would be well-advised to avoid Newry.

Do work colleagues book rooms and groups of them then head upstairs to renew and reinforce their friendships?

Newry is the archetypal 'valley of the squinting windows', if you are familiar with that novel.

A social is a few friends meeting in a pub ...work colleagues...anything ...no one goes upstairs to anywhere to renew anything ....is there a misunderstanding here....

I helped organise a social lunch in lisburn in a cafe run by a religious group and the 12 of us had it had a great time...no one burst into flames..no one was squinting through windows ...its just a friendly chat not a fuck fest

'The valley of the squinting windows' refers to the phenomenon whereby in some loci (worldwide) everyone knows everyone else's business; and that info spreads like wildfire

Newry is such a place.

The fact that one swingers' group had such an (adverse) experience, a few years ago in Newry, is no surprise!

Lisburn or Belfast is a better option.

It's a group of people meeting for a chat, pick a time and place and just arrive no need to organise anything, even busy bodies in Newry would be none the wiser and if people want to go home to someones place after then what's the harm

I was talking about a social too.

Not a play party. No upstairs. Just a social.

Jubal is right - everyone knows everyone and info spreads like wild fire.

You don't even have to advertise it as a swingers event to the venue or anyone publicly.

Just have a few attendees be from newry or w/point and within a few weeks there will be a "talk".

Not trying to party poop here, just know from personal experience how hard and fast the news travel in that neck of woods.

There have been many socials in Newry over the years. I've been to a few of them... I never stayed over but am I right in thinking there aren't many accommodation options in the area and what is there is quite expensive relative to Belfast (due to less options). Maybe that's no longer the case.

Plenty of hotel options, canal court in middle of the town, Carrickdale a short trip up the road, kileavy castle not so far away either, plenty of bnbs, and someone might invite a few people back to their place too, I don't live too far away

Thanks for the support guys and gals, I do definitely understand the fear of the gossip and talk, I live in Newry my self, although only for a few years after moving from Wales, but have witnessed the Newry gossip mill. do any of you know of any venues near but outside of town? the alternative would be a camping kinda trip but thats not as glam and not every ones cup of tea. As i dont know much of the surrounding area, im not clued up on what might be better venues

Realistically, Belfast is the best option: up around Botanic Avenue, University Street, or Bradbury place.

No-one gives a damn up there what group, club or society you belong to, or what your preferences are!

We would both be up for going for a social.

Newry is a gossip filled, religious and other things hell hole though. Lived in it for 8 years and glad we’ve moved outwards. So I can get where others are coming from. But we don’t really care what others think.

I appreciate the belfast suggestions, but the whole idea is to move something out of belfast so that its closer to dublin as well. To make it more accessible for futher a feild,

As there are quite a few social events in Belfast and Dublin already.

If Newry is thought to be too parochial then I'd rule Banbridge out

Everyone knows everyone! There is one venue just on the outskirts of Banbridge which might be suitable (depending on numbers you're hoping for) but other than it I'd give The Bann a wide berth. Feel free to pm me OP

Lisburn is anonymous: The Premier Inn, I think, is between Sprucefield and Lisburn.

Anonymous hotel, nobody knows, nobody cares!

You have no comprehension of the way information is transmitted around Newry area: lethal!

Really don't understand what the issue is, nobody needs to know anything about a swinging event it can be a reunion of old work colleagues, they must have very little to talk about in Newry.. Just book a time and place fuck what other people think
