Any hints on how to approach it? I heard the RTE podcast is good-did you think so?

Yep.

It's shite.

And not just the trendy kinda shite... it's over long, meandering, self indulgent and worst of all left me feeling bored and cold.

Joyce MAY have been a literary genius, but he was no story teller.

I personally would never be enticed to read it cover to cover as it doesn't suit my style of learning; I suspect that in certain circles it is regarded as de rigueur to say that you have read it.

Bloom's Day attracts, in my opinion, a particular class or category of person, whom I would not be enticed to meet: straw boaters, dickie bows, etc.

Joyce himself is very highly regarded in esteemed academic literary circles: he is exceptionally perceptive about the human condition.

Dubliners, no. Portrait, yes.

Portrait was the better of the two in my humble opinion, but I dislike art that seems impenetrable to a general audience.

I’d rather pull my own teeth than attempt to go back into that book.

Brilliant stage adaptations and punctuation-less soliloquys are brilliant but a horrendously tedious read. Painful. And I’ve read tomes on the Ottomans and Boars.

I've started a few times over the years but never got far.

Makes me wonder is it just attractive to those who actually saw the Emperor's New Clothes

Got to break it into the episodes, one at a time... take a break with each one. It’s really rich with the language and the Dublin slang and “accents” in it are great. Worth getting through just to say you’ve read it.... far more doable than “Finnegan’s Wake”....
