From the lounge

Growing up I expected that by 2022 none of us would need to know how to parallel park . You would press a button and the car would just do it automatically.

What advances did you think would happen by know ? Flying robots ? Time travel ?

Honestly though we would have stopped using toxic fuels by now.

Not going to lie, I was looking forward to hover cars and colonizing/terraforming of another planet.

Hate being cynical but there isn't much money for some industries if for example, nuclear power became more accessible.

Even things like VR aren't really going to be mainstream for another 10 years at this rate.

One that I'm kinda disappointed about is Space travel, I don't want private companies to be the ones looking towards colonization etc. With the international space station, I'd expect a more united front in space but we haven't really done anything revolutionary yet.

The development of tech solutions and more importantly the pace at which technology is implemented is invariably overestimated, especially by journalists; for example viable fusion nuclear generation will take another 100 years as will a successful return journey from Mars.

The car parking is around for years, had it in my 2010 Skoda, Sky full of flying robots these days with so many drones around! The time travel bit I'm not sure about

SETI, the search for extra terrestrial intelligence has been largely abandoned because of the realisation that the incomprehensible vastness of the cosmos, and the laws of physics, means we will never be in contact with any other intelligent lifeforms that are statistically bound to exist out in the universe.

Mercifully, the delusional UFO nutcases seem to be getting less vocal compared to several decades ago.

We are probably not alone, but any form of contact will inevitably never take place.

Light from the Andromeda galaxy, our near neighbour in the local cluster has taken two million years to reach us!

Just fyi alot of cars have a self park feature now.. in fact Ford and Renault were doing it 10 or so years ago with even some of there base models... some tesla models have the autonomous mode too which most californians use to have a nap while on there way to work.. its mad check it out on YouTube etc

I used to get a monthly magazine called Quest back in the late 80's I think. Loved it.

I always loved the concept of what future cars might look like and seeing the latest EV designs reminds me of the drawings back then.

Attended a talk recently where a BMW tech expert presented information about autonomous cars. He said the technology for "hands off" and "eyes off" driving is quite advanced now but our road and street infrastructure is not set up to allow it be deployed safely.

Some more modern theories on technological development, state that the great spurt of inventions were made between 1870 and 1970 and since then, we've just been recycling those inventions and marketing them in new forms.

A great book I recommend is "The Shock of the Old", which analyses how older technology often perform just as well as modern ones.

At the mo, I'd like to see the vast majority, if not all, of investment go into medicine, for example, it is now possible to regrow people's fingers and possibly other parts of the body, but health services are not privy to this technique.
