Kerry and Dublin

Does anyone have any experience organising group socials and have any advice/experience they could share?

Would you generally start with the forums then move to private messaging people?

Would a pub social be better for a first time group meet, or would some sort of activity based meet work better?

Is it worth the effort?

Have helped organise a couple at this stage usually between 12 and 14 people at them

One near Belfast was in a cafe for a few hours after lunchtime.. a great venue

The rest were in beer gardens in pubs ...usually booking the tables by calling into the pub and asking them to hold the tables

An open thread on the forums was used to advertise it followed by private messaging to let people know what town it was on in once the wanted to go

Use your instinct to out those you think are a pain in the hole that you won't like to have a drink with anyway or those that complain about the mix of men and women going

On the day a private message around noon to each person giving them the actual location and asking them not to share it online

I've met some great people at them and its nice to put a face to a name

I am part of a very sucessful griup who meet reguardly for fun we sometimes organise coffee socials for the next day like bogman says puxk a location and a date post it on the forums yes they take a bit of effort and you will get the odd timewaster but they are great fun and a great way on meeting genuine people who are into the scene i have madw some very genuine friendships from them

Personally I think a good event is ALL about a good venue. Start there. Then set your date and your entry criteria. People WILL come if you yet the basics right.

A pub or a cafe is brilliant idea and keep it to a small idea, as sometimes big socials can be a bit intimidating for people, I went to a small social recently and had a great chat with everyone, and you get to know people a bit better.

What she said but I can also say, event organizing is rough, if you want a good crowd make sure the requirements are right. People want to feel safe. For most events I've been to, the event organizer barely gets to have fun on the night because they have to make sure everything is going okay.

It would be great on you to start one and if it was local, I'd probably attend it. Good luck!

Totally agree I've been to some really fun socials and the venue was definitely a factor making it great night.

I'd say start small. Research venues. Take into consideration seating, opening times, is food served, parking availability, access to public transport. Basically all the boring seemingly trivial stuff.

Attend other socials and see what works and what doesn't. Also by doing so you'll see it from an attendees perspective and will have a much better idea of the questions people will ask and what they might expect.

I suppose one of the motivations for [thinking about] organising one is the lack of socials I've had the chance to attend

The other recommendation I'd make is pick a date and time that suits you.

Don't ask on a forum what date suits others as you'll only get 20 different dates back...

People will either make it or they wont

Good shout. I'm working in hospitality at the moment, so I would need to organise it for when I'm free
