Anti social media

Has social media become anti social? I was in the food court in a shopping centre yesterday and a couple walked in with an infant in a buggy. The child was probably around 18-24 mts old. They went to the counter, ordered their food and when it arrived they headed for seats just opposite me. From the time they sat down until I got up to leave around 15 mins later, they barely looked up from their phones. The child was sat bolt upright looking around with wide eyes taking everything in. It actually broke my heart to see such a gorgeous little thing being ignored by its parents or possibly grand parents. Tbh,it put me in a foul mood for the day. I know social media is fantastic, especially when used properly but I despair for our future generations because most of us are so caught up in it that we are missing out on life itself. Everywhere you go you see people with their head down and looking at the phone!! Apologies for the negative post but it's just something that pissed me off yesterday. Are we becoming more anti social as a society???

The pub then supermacs ...

My niece and nephew are young their never not looking at my sister and brother in laws phone if you ask them to put the phone down they pick up a tablet...It's extremely hard to ingage with them for any length of time it's sad as it's like an obsession with them....

Ive met people for coffee or been in there company for long periods of time on here and they spent a lot of time glancing or flicking through there phone's it makes me think im definitely boring them if they can't give me a small bit of there time

Belfast

I'm on FB but rarely use it. That's the only social media I have.

It's a bit like being on here for some people who either have an extra few hours in their day or they really are that unproductive.

I'll admit if I'm on a break from work I'll have my phone out but if I'm having lunch with someone or playing with my grandkids the phone is never out.

I asked a question on a FB business page recently and got attacked by a business owner ranting about stupid people contacting business through their social media pages rather than doing the legwork and ringing them directly.

Ironic really as he was advertising his businesses on social media so it can be antisocial in a number of ways.

It's bad manners. Especially when you're out. The phone causes more rows in our house than anything else! Can't even watch a movie but the phones are out...and that includes the kid's. I've banned all screens at the dinner table and we actually converse now. Took a long time for them to adjust to eating without the phone beeping away.

Ask a question now and everyone Google's the answer instead of just using the brain!!

Almost as ironic as me complaining about social media on here...

somewhere

Anytime i meet someone for coffee during the working day I explain that I'm self employed and need to keep my phone on

I'll look at the screen if it rings and silence it except if a foreman from the job ...they need answers or they wouldn't ring but I always explain

My bugbear....people at concerts with the phone up in the air watching the gig via the small screen....live for the moment...watch the bloody stage

For work,it's fine,I don't mind that. I know exactly what you mean about gigs though...same at football matches! Why bother going???
