I believe that Microsoft are going to prompt people to migrate their Live Messenger details over to Skype.

I prefer Skype, as anyone who's used both will likely agree

I believe its only the Messenger side that is being closed - all other Microsoft/Windows Live services will remain the same for the foreseeable future, so you should in theory be fine.

"yahoo stopped their chat rooms years ago for similar reasons"

The yahoo chat rooms are dead?? Not that it matters anymore as I stopped using messenger when:

1) my contacts stopped logging on and only used email

2) the chatrooms got full of bots

3) the only human users were either trying to hack your account if you had a legacy ("rare") username (like mine)

4) were Philipino, Singaporean or Ukranian girls "seeking pen-pals around the world" and "really" wanted to meet you but could not afford to fly over.

5) Americans who actively hated Brits and were ready to descend into 5-year old playground slanging matches - on the basis of what country your profile was from.

So they got rid of the chatrooms as a whole?? Wow.
