Does anyone know: is it something to do with particular file formats or is the picture quality of pics uploaded to fab just poorer?

I'd say it's the site, once uploaded they compress the pics and become shitty quality

There is an option to turn on HD photos for site supporters. It's off by default and you need to opt in.

I think it is a combination of the higher resolution images being saved as a perk for site supporter. In combination, I think I’m certain instances, it’s also for our own protection and to avoid a mass Event Horizon situation where we stitch up our own eyes.

How are your photoshopping/editing skills?

I’ve been advised that it’s impossible to make a silk purse from a pigs ear so I’m not holding out much hope….
