Following the recent events in sligo in which 2 men were castrated and beheaded and a 3rd man blinded in 1 eye, do you feel uncomfortable meeting strangers now? These 3 men met this madman on a dating app, what precautions do you take before meeting a stranger from the Internet?

Everyone should take precautions when meeting strangers from the Internet. Unfortunately some people may not be "out" yet so they feel the need to sneak around and that puts them in danger. Always remember that nobody can tell why you are sitting having a coffee with someone. So always try to at least meet someone socially in public first to see if you at least feel safe around them. Women have had to think about these precautions forever. But unfortunately male on male violence isn't shown as much in the media so they tend to feel less cautious. This isn't to victim blame anyone. It's just the world we live in until attitudes change. What has happened recently is horrific and I hope that at least some awareness can come from it.

By doing what I've always done and using common sense and making people jump through hoops.

That may sound flippant but I don't take my personal safety or that of others lightly.

By the time I get around to meeting someone we've already been chatting for a while and they are less of a stranger.

I'll have already formed an opinion based on those conversations and then and only then will we meet in a public place.

The Sligo incidents are truly shocking; off the scale: castrations, etc!

I am always scrupulously careful, particularly after an incident over a decade ago in which I played along for a whole day with a bizarre scenario that I knew I could control.

It was a very educational experience, that I have often reflected upon and later used to my benefit when I was in another unysual situation with an extremely dangerous guy who later went on to murder a stranger.

When he became threatening I let him know, in no uncertain terms, looked him in the eye, and told him to settle himself.

I suspect it was the first time a target had stood up to him.

I will be interested to learn, in due course, the details of why the foreign guy killed and mutilated the Sligo residents.

Similarly, the young woman who met such a tragic and horrendous fate on the towpath near Tullamore.

Irish society, regrettably is becoming more dangerous

May these victims RIP. My heart goes out to their families, friends and acquaintances.

As a decent and genuine person. I would not let this put me off in the slightest any more than being scared of crossing the road.

Just make sure that you look left and right before you do.

One has to balance security against having good experiences and not letting one ruin the other...

The sad thing about it all is that the family or loved ones of a victim have to live the rest of their lives without that person but the person who committed the offence doesn't , they're out in a few years and twill be said that they've done their time , payed for what they've done but in truth they haven't .

Not sure what the guys motive was but a lot of chatter about mental illness and coming from a background that believes in the deathy penalty for gay people!

"Truly shocking what happened, inviting a stranger to your home is a big big gamble. It's very hard to imagine a person going through with such a vicious act into someone else.

There was an investigation on a guy who waited outside nightclubs to find a guy who was alone and very d*unk. Pretend to help him and then gave him something to pass out in a nearby flat and sexually assaulted them. Plus video'd the assault for his own pleasure. We need to be more vigilant on websites and apps when meeting strangers.

Like someone said previously, let someone know if you're plans. Meet in a public place for a coffee for a chat. Arrange another meet after that, you'll get a vibe from the person is you feel comfortable or not in their company."

It's rare I'll meet someone without having chatted for a bit. So like RB, I would have somewhat of an opinion on them.

All of my meets are social, in public first. I will never waiver on that.
