Yesterday I gave a lift to a friend of mine to the airport and I never saw such chaos! Unbelievable!

It was one of the things working in Ireland .

Coincidentally the same chaos in some UK airports and also in Brussels Airport and frankfurt Airport and Charles de gaulle in Paris. I only know because I was travelling for work and some other lads I work with were passing through the other airports.

Strange that the same carry on is happening at the same time in a number of different places.

And going through Dublin security instead of every 10th bag getting a "random" check and swab, every bag was getting diverted for a check and swab after the xray which didn't help matters

Other than staff missing, issues in recruiting, experienced staff let go during COVID and unexperienced new staff I read on a newspaper that last year the European Authorities were testing security in all Airports and Dublin failed 7 times... Basically European Personnel travels undercover and try to smuggle in prohibited items through security....in 7 different occasions those people boarded planes as Dublin Airport Security failed in controlling them...

So now, everyone gets also extra checked...

All those factors are causing the issues.

Shortage of staff but also passengers themselves don't help, as a frequent flyer I've (mr) been saying for years, when people (not all by the way) go through security they have no clue what they are doing, it's simple what you have to do and remove as they tell you often enough and posters all over

Plus also been told passengers are turning up at the airport 6-8hrs before the flight

Failure of the so-called gig economy; except that in this instance, and all over Europe, there has been a lamentable failure to plan ahead for the post Covid recovery of the airline industry, and the inevitable demands this would place on airports, such as the DAA (Dublin Airports Authority).

The current chaotic Dublin shambles was entirely foreseeable; it will continue for months.

At London Heathrow, 13,000 staff, who have been recruited, are waiting to be vetted to work there at this moment; the normal lead time from a successful interview to actual security work is 12-15 weeks.

I usually scan the lines of people and can usually spot the lines to be avoided.

Put your shoes in the tray / belt /empty your pocket (put the contents in my shoes)

Have you any liquids or pastes oh no, beep oh except that beeeep oh and that beeeep oh and that, beeep oh but that's only red bull beeeep oh that's my vodka to go with my red bull BEEEEEEEEEP that wasn't security that was me beeping out the expletives ha ha

What I seen 2 weeks ago wasn't normal. We were fast enough at security, but they were pulling every single bag for drug tests. Never seen this before. And I used to work in the airport with a daily view of T1 Airport security

Allegedly there was a change to the garda vetting protocols for new staff which is delaying them hiring new staff as they are going through bureaucracy which is now rattling through to become the scenes that we are witnessing now

Seems interesting that most of the delays are in T1...read as low cost...very few delays reported from T2 where the national carrier and trans atlantics fly from.

Heard from a colleague its staffing issues..but the root cause of the staffing issue could be very broad as pointed out by some of the previous posters on this thread

The waiting time for this 7 years ago was 6-12 months already. If what you are saying is true that means even more waiting time. That is crazy. They need to sort the vetting time

I travel through Dublin fairly regularly and have seen the delays pretty bad at times but it’s becoming a bit of a joke at this stage.

First there was que’s and delays, then they told people to arrive at least 3 hours before their flight, then they said there were delays because people were arriving early for their flights and now they’re telling people to arrive early, give themselves lots of time, but don’t arrive to early……

From what I saw the delays were obviously because of the volume of passengers and not enough staff to deal with them.

In the line for security that I was in there seemed to be a few problems which I could see as I got closer.

As I approached the screening area I could see the line had stopped moving and I could see the problem, there was no trays available even though you could see them piled high only a few yards away, I saw a man in the line talking to a member of staff, he asked him what the hold up was, the staff member told him there were no trays, the man pointed to the big pile of trays and said what about those and the staff member replied “it’s not my job to get trays”……

The next problem was that the vast majority of bags and trays were being pulled to one side for further inspection to the point that there was such a backlog of bags and trays to be searched no more could be put through the scanner, and obviously not enough staff to search the bags, a joke…

Now don’t get me wrong, security checks exist for a reason and Dublin airports track record as far as security audits go isn’t the best I believe so ultimately I’d always rather be on the ground wishing I was in the air than in the air wishing I was on the ground.

I spoke to a couple first thing this morning who were planning to be at Dublin Airport at 0830 for a flight to Chicago departing at 1400 hours; such was their concern about missing the transatlantic flight due to security check delays.

I didn't think you could. I thought you could only walk T1 to T2 outside.

Some flights you check into one terminal....but the plane is at the other terminal and you've to walk between...usually Aer Lingus Regional

Or dont wrar things you have to take off going thru security. I normally pack that sorta stuff into my hand luggage before i go near security

they're saying before 9 in morning is the worst but you get emails asking you to be there 3.5/4 hrs before your flight.

You have an extraordinary number of traveler's at Easter, pent up demand for two years and add to that, a shortage of staff. In fairness, I think they're coping very well.

It was my good deed for the week, Galway to Dublin and straight back in the middle of the night.

A Friend of mine went through T1 yesterday morning, flight was at 11 so they got there around 8. Bag drop took 1.5 hours and then security took 30 mins.

Hopefully after Easter things will settle down a bit and they will have more staff in place by the summer holiday season.

On the same subject of flying - any kind enough to reply - live in n ireland flyinging from dub to malaga - what do i need apart from patience and leave more time? Is it just proof of vacine now (which i have on both an app and printed version) am i right in saying no more passenger locator forms? And will they temp check us when we arrive, anyone? Vaccine passport or negative pcr are usually required on your airline check in, no paperwork looked for in airport

Passenger locator form not required travelling back to Ireland but all depends in where your travelling too as they might still require it
