Hi

Just looking for advice from people that have experience in this

We had 2 dogs for 8 years...one died 2 yrs ago and the other one is going asleep later today

I drive past The DSPCA going home every day ....whats the best thing to do for the family

Get another dog straight away or leave a period of time in between to adjust

Does a new dog help the heartache

What works best in your experience

I'm so sorry to hear that. I had to put one of my cats to sleep last year, it's so tough. I would recommend giving yourselves some time to process the grief. Also if you adopt again straight away, you might get a dog with a completely different personality and just get a bit of a shock, ya know.

Big hugs x

I've gone through the exact same thing, and I'm very sorry to hear about your doggo. They're family really.

I was an emotional wreck and wanted to take a bit if time, but within a week I got my new doggy just because the house felt so empty. And honestly it done me the world of good, having a new doggy in the house was just amazing, the excitement of it all over again, trying to get him used to the place, the zoomies, the cuddles, letting him dig holes in the garden and eat my cushions really helped the void and grief of losing the other one.

Get it straight away. There's nothing like the heartache of having to put a long loyal friend to sleep. Its the only time I cry uncontrollably

Sorry to hear it BM, we've all been through it.

Only you know what is best for your family. We're 3 years down the line from losing our beloved mongrel and only now coming round to the idea of replacing her

Im sorry to hear about your loss. I think its important to know which dog your choosing, with a family with children. an adult dog would be good over a pupper BUT you need to check if it has a medical record or bite histroy. shelter dogs dont often have both but still

Same as that, its a dreadful thing to have to do but you do it for the greater good of the pet but it hurts like he'll. I'm not sure I could go straight out and get a replacement, I left it 12 months to process the loss after 16 years of having your best pal to greet you every time you walk in the front doorthe right thing to do. I've got a new pal now and good love her she is thick as a brick but still love her to bits.

I guess just do what you feel is right and when you feel it's the right time and everything will be right in the world again.

Sorry to hear though

Taking a fairly clinical approach to it I would leave and let your children experience the grief that comes with it. Sounds kinda bad, but one of the benefits of pets for kids is that often it will be the first time their experience the death of someone important to them.

If they've already lost someone important to them I'd be more inclined to get a new dog sooner.

Ah sorry BM to hear about that pets get to be like family members. When any of our kittens die there has to be full on funeral and mourning procession

Sorry to hear that BM, on my own experience (mr) as I've nearly always had a dog I would get another straight away but with our kids now and our dog on his later years of life I'd say we would have to give it a bit of time for the kids

So sorry to hear that.

Our dog if near 14 years passed this time last year. We got her cremated. She was like another child to me and watched out for my elderly parents and all. I didn't think I should get a new one straight away but ended up with a stray by accident.

Was the best thing that could have happened.

Sorry for your loss, we lost two in 12 months so we feel your pain, however a three month old rescue is definitely helping. Good luck with whatever you choose.

That's really sad news. It's so hard to bring an old friend to the vet like that.

I've usually had two dogs of different ages so I haven't had a dogless house for a long time so I wouldn't have any advice for how soon to get a new one.

I would encourage you to rescue one. Also rescuing one means that the dog might already be house trained and won't be as much of a shock as starting again from scratch with a pup.

Best of luck.

BM I lost our cocker spaniel in Jan last year and it was heartbreaking. I said never again but after 10 months got another dog, a Saluki cross. I'm so glad we did. He's been a bit crazy but great to have around.

Sorry to hear about that tough decision you had to make about your family pet .

It’s like losing a family member and takes time to get over it .. if ever . Been in your situation and possibly one of the toughest things you have to do especially where children are involved.. take the next few days to see how they are and their reactions… maybe discuss the idea with them all as a family chat about whether they would like another one or not …. Because one thing for sure that pet can never be replaced just like losing a family member .

Chin up and stay strong for your kids sake

You’ll know best by their reactions.

It's a horrible feeling. I had to put one of mine to sleep last summer. Didn't think I could get another until the other one passed but he got so lonely (they were together for 10 years), so less than 2 months later, I ended up with a rescue that happened by chance.

The older dog now has a new lease of life with his new brother.

I'd wait for a few weeks anyways and give yourself time to process the loss.

Sorry to hear that BM . I personally would take some time. It might seem like a good idea and to offer a dog a new and good home. But they will take time to adjust and would be better to grieve for a while. A pet is family really.

Lost a few dogs over the years (literally had a dog of some kind since I was 4) I do feel that getting a new dog helps the greiving process.

The critical issue, BM, is whether you are the type of person who needs a period of grieving; or are you the type who moves on very rapidly?

Only you can truly answer that question. I had to have my beloved dog, to which I was committed to provide the best (most appropriate) life that I could provide, put to sleep sixteen years ago.

I never got another; my life had changed and I was not able to dedicate the time required, as I knew I would be away all day, on every day for the future.

I do really miss having a dog; they are great companions and are always delighted to see you; but they have to be cared for appropriately; active dogs, which I prefer, need lots of exercise.

To leave such a dog alone every day is cruel and irresponsible; this is not my form.

If and when you get another canine companion, let us know the details: breed, age and source; and has it made a difference in your lives.

I’m very sorry to hear that. It’s a very difficult thing to have to do and I’m sure this weekend wasn’t easy. I think that is a very individual /family decision. Everyone in the family grieves differently - I’m sure you will do what is right for you and your family.

So very sorry for your loss ??. I had the privilege of loving my dog Sue for 17yrs. She was put to sleep in my arms because of inoperable cancer. My dad tried to help by bringing me a pup. I'm one of the most soft hearted people you could meet, but I couldn't love that pup. I felt guilty. It was too soon. I got him a good home, where he would be loved. 10 yrs on I share my bed with 2 rescues. Hence why I can't accommodate

Dog owners, at least the types that take their dogs for walks are usually kind and considerate people.

Very rarely do you meet dog owners who are cold and callous; if I have met someone who was cruel and insensitive or nasty and irritable towards my dog, I regarded that as being the reddest of red flags.
