Nothing to do with swinging, but sure where else would we go to for worldy advice

ESB smart meters. Anyone had them installed recently? Changes in your bill good or bad. Anyone heard reasons not to have the upgrade?

i have one installed, it really just offers a more accurate bill, and it allows you to change what tariff your on as there is more choice for them, they also allow you to integrate solar pv , water heating if you have one.

Its a lot easier to switch providers when you have a smart meter..no taking the readings..its automatically done

Not sure, but I think it allows you to monitor your energy usage and see what appliances are eating up the leccy.

They are very common in GB; you know when to switch off the immersion heater when the figures are rapidly changing.

The make the generation and supply of power more efficient, eventually, when enough houses have them installed.

No more visiting meter readers; all automatic.

Its hard to tell how it saves you money as everything is going up anyway

I switch providers every year and thought this year it was end January out of contract

Turned out to be end November so my bill was 575 euro

I switched providers to get a better deal

The old provider offered me a better deal to stay as it was within the 14 day cooling off period ....they back dated the better rate to end November using the smart meter data and offered me an extra 200 discount to stay

Got 375 off the bill in total

If you have a day/night meter - stay away… you will get a much better rate on old system. Otherwise it is not a bad option - but take a look at usage and time of usage to try and see if it would be good or bad for you. If you have electric car or plan to get electric car than a day/night meter is better value.

There is no change in the price per unit when switching over to a smart meter. You're charged the same amount for the same usage. They use the mobile phone network to report your reading automatically so no need to have someone come to read it. They are a logical progression and very handy for peoole like me with a meter indoors that aren't easily read.

Thanks for the feedback, we were told that even though its advertised as FOC, there is a new charge on your bill after. Nothing in this life is ever free. Just curious as to peoples experience.

what does the meter ues to be able to work,,? electricity so does it running all the time add to your bill? some old meters that are already working in peoples homes need special adapters to make the new meters fit to the gas and electric supply i was going to be charged £120 for the gas fitting but the electric would fit straight on so was offered to fit electric but as i pointed out a meter reader was still going to have to come to mine to read the gas meter so i did not bother getting them done

yeah, the meter is technically 'free' but we all know a part of these energy price hikes probably go towards it.

Please not more conspiracy theories about feckin smart meters of all things

Yes it needs electricity to run but the power comes from the unmetered supply going in

No you dont pay for it extra....its a cost to the ESB Networks ...but I'm sure there's a tiny tiny cost to us via the bills

There's a facility on mine to set up nightsaver but I dont use a lot of power at night so haven't bothered

If you want to save money the single greatest thing you can do is change suppliers every 12 months and keep the electricity and gas suppliers separate...its got better overall discounts

Don't forget that meter reading was a MASSIVE cost to the ESB. The cost (to them) of installing these new meters is offset by the saving they get for the automatic reading. Remember the meter is a once off charge and the meter never needs to be read year after year. That's why you don't need to pay

Of course it's going to cost extra. They aren't doing it for the good of their health. Each meter has a sim card installed and with that comes.... you guessed it, a monthly charge. And the new new meters are going to cost us even more. So exciting really isn't it

No more estimates...

Signal can be poor sometimes

It doesn't guarantee a reduction...you still need to switch off/plug out the things that are on standby

Chargers

Tvs

Radios

Lights

There are no extra charges for us. The network bears the small extra charge for the mobile network because it represents a cost saving for them. The mobile charges are less than employing someone to read the meter.

There is nothing smart about a ‘smart meter’. You are profiled and your profile and lifestyle information sold to advertising/marketing companies. They can workout, when you get up, go to bed, cook, are at home/out, your typical energy use for heating, number in household, if you have visitors, when you go on holiday etc. All this from your energy usage pattern. Furthermore they can automatically cut you off, restrict energy usage, and save them money by not employing (even if only a once a year check) a meter reader, you by the way, through energy use, pay for the sim card reading each time they use your energy to download your usage data, this is usually 4 times a day. What do you get from all this intrusion into your private life - answer a box that goes from green to red when you turn your kettle on! Never had a ‘smart meter’ and never will. Legally you do not have to have one no matter what your energy supplier says, the legislation makes it very clear, it is your choice.
