….

Had a conversation with a non fabber recently and they were saying since lockdown they’ve takin up training and working out and taking better care of there body but in fitness and health.

They said that the Irish as a population are not as into there fitness or appearance as much as some other country’s like Eastern Europe. I’ve never even taught of it like that.

Are we getting better ?

It's swings and roundabouts, some people are into their fitness and some are not. But in my opinion, I see a huge problem with the younger generation in relation to their diet and movement unfortunately

See i'd kinda disagree. My gym is absolutely over run with young girls and their insta pages. Kids and young rugby boys..

Im in the same gym 8 years now and the turnover has been insane. We used to be filled with okder guys like me chasing their youth lol.

Now its easily in the lower percentile . I noticed this over 6 yrs in mma aswell. Kids flowing through the ranks compared to older ones.

Definitly think with social media etc the fitness industry has exploded with many more kids than adults now. This also comes with problems though.

Would agree. Its the same in our gym. I dont consider myself old but i feckin feel it when im down there. My main issue with the gym is gangs of gaa heads hogging the machines and messing around. An issue for the gym to sort because its extremely uncomfortable.

I found many years ago that fitness would be much easier to do timewise if I just got weights and boxing bag at home and seeing as they are always here it's much more likely I will keep it up,and so it has been.

About 20 mins tops and I'm done

When we/people go to the gym it should be for ourselves not be worrying what others are doing is it a sign we are not fully committed to our health if we decide not to train just because of people looking in the mirror and posing .

A fitness goal should not be Instagram! But unfortunately in the social media age, it is a massive influence/distraction!

Agreed, any well run place should nip that nonsense in the bud, hogging machines and hanging around in groups to chat is just ignorant

There is some really ignorant gym behavior. There is a special place in hell for the people who don't bother putting the equipment they use back in it's place. So disrespectful to their fellow gym users!

on the hill NordWest of

Don't have recent gym experience but there defo is more cycling/jogging/walking/hiking etc. going on. That trend started already before the pandemic.

When it comes to diet and food not much has changed though and stats are showing an increasing overweight and obese population.

School sport is still an absolute joke unless you're a GAAer and it puts many young ones off exercising.

I had with a friend who owns and runs the largest gym in our area over a beer.

Long story short he broke it down into age groups but also a very interesting point was made on why younger guys try to get gym fit in comparison to younger females. Guys in his opinion tend to do it to improve their chances with the opposite sex and rarely spend time posting workout on insta etc. Females do it as much to build a persona online because of the amount of media taken while working out.

It tends not to be the case at all with over 35s. The biggest thing I took from it was he believes this attitude towards having to portray themselves in such a way online is extremely damaging to the mental health of some. At some point we all take a break and they aren't prepared to look "normal" again. Are we getting better, I believe we are but so many are doing it for the visual reason rather than health when you see the amount of unnecessary pre workouts and unclean supplements being taken.

Never really use gyms, just prefer the odd aerobic class, prefer to go for a run. Back jogging since end of January and have done the local parkrun since then. Down in Cork this weekend might do the Glen River Park run. Broke 40 minutes for the 5k last Saturday and hope to break 30 in the next few months

I've been training in some guise since I was in my late 20s but since COVID I just do home workouts and run. I find this is much more efficient use of time, instead of the faff of driving to a gym and waiting for weights/machines etc. For me, then there's no excuses and no talking myself out of a workout because I literally pull my trainers on or dander out to the garage to do some weights.

I/we may venture back to a gym someday...who knows.

I would say in answer to the original question that there's more of a spectrum of fitness and health and both ends of it seem to be getting more extreme, in my humble opinion.

I suppose with the Covid restrictions at the time a lot were out walking etc just to get out of the house for a short while and for their mental health and kept it going because they found they enjoyed it more , as regards going constantly to a gym l suppose you're into it or your not , l personally could never see the importance of it tbh but each to their own , some people dont feel complete unless they go to the gym , others prefer to walk , so whichever suits best l suppose.

No , you're not mad , just take things easy , just do what it is you're able to , DO NOT try to keep up with the younger guys doing it , do it for yourself .Best Wishes with it , it's the best thing you can do for yourself once you know you're not competing with others other than that you're good to go
