Tv shows which ended too soon

i travel all over

From the lounge

More often than not lots of TV shows get criticised for outstaying their welcome and going on too long.

What is rarely mentioned are shows that ended too soon, either cancelled or just a short run story.

Which TV shows do you feel ended too soon?

Very much agree with the lounge OP about MINDHUNTER on netflix, on a hiatus for the foreseeable future.

I would suggest "The Survivors" as well . It would be very topical if they showed the remake again and finished off the story. ( The series was cancelled leaving us with a cliff hanger as last episode)

Homefront, an American series set in post war Ohio, featuring returned soldiers and their families, misogyny, racism, martial difficulties, women's lib etc.

I thought it was really good but apparently the American networks thought it was too heavy.

Do you mean the Netflix adaptation of an absolutely classic timeless anime? It's good it's cancelled. It was an absolute travesty and an absolute insult to the characters and atmosphere of the original. I really tried to watch it with an open mind

The tv shows which are mostly fondly remembered are often those which had the shortest runs; for example Fawlty Towers.

These gems are very fondly remembered; sharp scripts, high production values, superb acting by carefully chosen actors, etc.

By way of contrast, the TV show, Crossroads, ran for nearly 5,000 episodes and is never mentioned fondly.

It was flogged to death.

One show that definitely ran for much too long was The Benny Hill Show, which today is crass, tacky and sexist. It is currently being rebroadcast on Free view; frankly I am both bored and embarrassed that I ever watched this trash.

The astute producers of TV gems know intuitively that "less is more"!

The cancellation of the original Star Trek series in the late-1960s has been proven to one of the worst business mistakes of all time.

It was through syndication of the shows that the original TV production company, Desilu discovered they had an enduring gem to exploit commercially.

Rome, after an excellent first series they had to cram about 3 seasons worth of story into the second when they knew they were being cancelled.

Similarly Game of Thrones needed at least one maybe two more seasons to finish the story properly.

The Prisoner by actor Patrick McGoohan was an impenetrable and almost incomprehensible drama, that was actually filmed in a fantasy village in Wales: white balls chasing prisoners, Mini Moke cars, and everyone known by a number.

Avant-garde dystopianism, which still has its followers who dress up in blazers (and visit the village) that were worn by 'the prisoners', who also included McGoohan himself!

Very weird drama indeed; if it hadn't stopped, I might have eventually been able to decipher what it was actually about.

My name is Earl: he hasn't even had chance to do the half of the list before the series was cancelled.

Rome was cancelled because it was enormously expensive. I think the second season was weaker, because the producers had to pack the story of 2-3-4. season into the second and final one. I liked it tho.

I'm a very serious guy who enjoys documentaries, but one series I had a real fondness for was:

The Dukes of Hazzard!

Utterly superficial late-1970s series, but there was something strangely charming about it; and those denim shorts that Daisy wore were...!

I may have got her name wrong, but those pants!

Yes, Minister and sequel, Yes, Prime Minister were superbly scripted series, that were based on the machinations behind the scenes in Whitehall.

All of the principal actors; Derek Fowlds, Nigel Hawthorne and Paul Eddington are deceased.

The writer, Anthony Jay, allegedly had the highest level contacts whom he consulted for storylines.

Two superb comedies that ended much too soon, over six decades ago, were:

The Phil Silvers Show, aka Sgt. Bilko, aka You'll Never Get Rich; and

The Beverly Hillbillies.

The only surviving actor from both shows is, I think, the guy who played Jed Bodine, who has capitalised in his role, minimally successfully since 1962.
