So based on a conversation earlier when I admitted driving 15km to the petrol station in the car showing zero diesel on the dash.....what breakdown stories have you got

Did you fill with wrong fuel

Did you run out of fuel or battery charge

Did you breakdown on the side of the road

Hopefully some funny stories

Our love at first sight story …. Himself stopped and fixed my puncture when I was stranded away from home with no money and phone ….

That’s the story we tell family rather than meeting on fab

I was in the woods one evening with an old friend from Fab. He left radio on and we were in the back seat. Half way through that song "The Boys are back in Town" the car battery went dead. It was one in the morning on a Monday night so neither of us would ring anyone for a jump. As neither one of us wanted to explain what we were doing in the woods at the time. So I ended up having to walk the 5k home in the pissing rain looking like the village prostitute in black fuck me boots. Lesson learnt already bring runners or a battery jump pack for emergencies!

My town

My dad years ago had a skoda. I'm talking late eighties a redish orange with black roof.

The thing would break down all the time. And most of the time I would have to push it, luckily people would help but I would hear every joke.

Like what's the best thing a skoda used for a skip

Why do skoda"s have heated windows to keep your hands warm while your pushing it

What do you call a skoda at the top of a hill a miracle

I hated that car I'm sure I have ptds cause of it

Was meeting a girl off fab. We had fun in her car she left the heating on. Had some fun, then car woulndt start.

Had to ring a mate of mine to come give us a jump. She jumped out of the car gave him a big kiss. Later i told him were her mouth had just been. He wasnt happy

40 years ago my neighbour who was a mechanic lent me an old Simca for a week.

5 of us including the mechanics son used it for getting around. Probably clocked up 500 miles that week.

It would have been a great car for curting because of the rear mounted engine. There was literally nothing between the engine block and the back seat apart from a sheet of reflective foil and anyone in the back seat was slowly cooking and had to remove clothes.

Women in those days must have been knowledgeable about cars because none of them were ever interested in going for a spin

I was driving an ancient DAF minibus driving from Amsterdam to the Hague with a load of mad Irish after finishing work and when we got to the Hague reverse went on the bus gearbox so we had to keep going forward trying to find a way out of the city centre

Going down pedestrian streets and 1 way streets,wrong way,until we somehow ended up in some kind of parade with guys on horseback and in fancy costumes and here wasn't the Dutch Queen just ahead of us waving at the crowds,followed by a bus load of mad heads and us all waving at the crowds too

Cops soon escorted us away and down a side street

Bus could be still there for all I know

Had a similar experience once on the 12th July. One of my customers had an equipment breakdown and called me out because the 12th was being held there and the town was packed.

Most of the side streets were closed so after explaining my dilemma to a cop he radioed through to his colleagues and they directed me through the one way system in the middle of the Orange parade.

It only took 15 mins to get where I was going but it was the longest 15 mins ever and most people probably wondered what a berlingo had to do with King Billy

Not a car breakdown but a motorbike one..

Driving on motorway, overtaking an Eireann bus and the bike started shaking... This all happened on a bend.

Passed the bus and immediately stopped on the left shoulder, in the middle of the motorway... The rear tyre was almost falling apart...

Thank god it only inflated rather than exploding or I wouldn't be here telling this story.

My last van had to be brought home on the back of a truck within a 12 month period. Every time I fixed something another thing broke. 1st was turbo, then clutch and finally the starter.

It’s bad enough having to pay to fix the damn thing but the hidden loss of sitting at home not be able to go to work is a killer. So lesson learned and it’s new form now on.

And yes I know new vans can brake down too

Yeah, I had once the power steering light coming on, didn't know what it meant until I hit the 270° link loop going from the n4 onto m50. I knew then, it was a unexpectedl upper arms muscle test and a seemingly never ending loop.

Sure some of us only had none power steering cars starting off DH.....we didnt know how easy it would get later in life

Driving back from work in Dublin a few years ago nd the car went on the blink,had breakdown assist on the insurance so we got dropped off in naas by the tow truck driver,we had to walk about 2 miles...in the rain with bags,then gave 45 mins arguing with the crowd we were getting the car from...drove out of there in a vw up,two lads both 6ft + in one of those...and about 5 miles out side nass a warning light came on in the vw

Had a Peugeot 206 years ago that had a mind of its own, turning sharp left corners it would cut out, it also would cut out on motorways doing 70mph a bit scary doing that speed and everything shuts off, no power steering nothing, just turned the key again and it fired back up again, the front electric windows would open and close whenever they felt like it at the most inappropriate times like in a rain storm resulting in a soaking, Peugeot are cheap cars their electrics are a disgrace steer clear

Had skoda Octavia 8 years ago just had spent €2000 on it , went to referee a soccer match ... and I think I went over a speed bump little fast and from that had punctured hole in oil sup... got to match parked up two hours later left now without knowing that had leaked oil... driving home 15mins later engine blows and car is fucked... lesson learnt that day don't spend more than €750 when buying new banger

My first car - smart fortwo.

Had it for a bit, was perfectly fine, one night was driving from newry to newtownabbey to see Dirk, out of the blue in a middle of motorway car just jumped out of 6th gear (automatic) and started breaking and revving af at the same time.

Only had my licence for about 6 months so was bricking it like crazy. It got so bad that last 5 miles I was doing 30mph on the motorway, but closest exit was the one I needed to take, so just had to roll with it.

Breaks started smoking....

Arrived alive in one piece, thoroughly traumatised.

Dirk took the car for a ride around the block to check what was wrong with it. It was completely fine, only overheated breaks were stinking.

Apparently there was a penny wedged in the breaks and that was the reason why it started breaking by itself while I was accelerating.

Next car I had was my dream car - Smart Roadster - nippy wee thing, only 750cc, but was like a proper race car.

Bought it with replaced engine. Obviously lol.

After almost a year driving it - engine blew up, only realised it had no power at uphill traffic light. I was first in line.

When it turned green, there I was, sitting, unable to move....

Somehow after a bit, I managed to drive it to nearest parking space and call for help.

Dirk towed me home....

Third car.. Smart fortwo again.

It had a fuel saving power off at stops thingy.

5am, me going to work, stopped at the lights on a roundabout.

Engine off, light turns green - engine doesn't start back on.

Loose connection in electronics.

No autosparks or mechanics could find a fault in it..

Was stuck with the temperamental bastard for over a year.

Was running mostly fine,only had to switch off start stop thing as soon as I started the engine.

There has been days where it would take over an hour just to start the engine...

Got a great wee Toyota IQ now and wouldn't change it for the world.

Stopped to help a lady broken down on a dangerous bend at the bottom of a hill on quite a busy road in cork, so i offered to tow her to a safer spot a few miles up the road. Out came the tow strap and off we went but jeez it was like towing a truck. I struggled getting up the hill and the smell of overheating clutch was quite bad by the time we got to the pull in spot. It was only after pulling off the road to the safer spot that i discovered she had her hand brake on the whole time. I did offer her a lift to town but she called a friend to come collect her. So i set off down the road and 5 miles later my clutch disintegrated leaving me on the side of the road waiting for a towtruck. No good deed ever goes unpunished i guess.

I was 17 with a literally 1 week old driving licence. I "borrowed" my mum's Daewoo Matiz for a first date with a girl on a Friday night. All went good, we ended up at a lakeside, things turned even better despite the limitations of the car. So when we decided to drop her home at 3am, I tried to reverse from the parking lot, but haven't seen that those covering grills from the concrete ditch are missing. So the nearside wheels of the car fell into the ditch and I wasn't able to get them out due the shortage of driving abilities.

So I had to go for help to those anglers like 100 yards away. They were helpful thank god, car was lifted out, but got given out cause they heard everything was done in the car in the last hours :D

I felt like a loser, but we were together for 2 years eventually

Not a car story but a lorry running out of diesel on Main Street mullingar a few years back and the guards had to come to and direct traffic but I couldn’t admit there was no diesel in it so I got my friend to come and we made it look like there was a big problem underneath the cab and while we were doing that we got drums of diesel tipped into the tank
