Why the age restrictions? Surely they do a physical test, if thats why.

I wanted to go all GI Jo and join the military for the bootcamp and to fire guns, though I'd be like Mrs Bean with a gun

Thankfully I'm too old so everyone is safe

They want the older members to stay on now but won't recruit over 34's but times are changing, so hopefully it will change all in good time in regards the age issues. Personally i think it should go by ability rather than age.

Its do with the pension age which is daft. Should up the age limit to join, have some life experience and not be a little pup

Not to be dismissing the Gaurds… but are 90% of Gaurds college drop outs who took the job as a safe secure job.

You never hear of anyone wanting to be a Gaurd, they drop out or fail a college course and get into that way as a last straw. Just my opinion, no offence intended

I applied once, i lied about my age, i was a teenshie bit underage, but filled out all the forms in the station. When the Sergeant found out, i had to go to the station and apologise, and got the most memorable bollickin.

The age thing should be done away with, once you can pass the medical and fitness test should be ok, life experience counts for a lot in that job, I see there was challenges to the age thing a while back and they won their case, but the review of the age thing is taking it’s time

Except I know three different lads who have degrees, two of them having the same Bachelor's degree I have, who are Gards now and always wanted to be. I know two women then that joined the army, went to college and are also serving in the Garda.

All this talk of failing courses yet you failed basic 2nd class spelling and sentence structure

You go look up their background history and tell me then as I've given you the info for the Gardai I mentioned to back up my claims. You're the one making statements without anything to back you up. So let me know when you have the info for the 14,000 individuals

Yes and I said any Gardai that I know have all dropped out of college and joined the Gardai for a handy number. Same unsubstantiated claim as the “three lads” you know.

If you had anyway decent degree why would you go to the Gardai for lower money and poor shift patterns. You’re full of it

Being a Garda is a highly responsible job, but a lot more dangerous than was formerly the case because of the increasing level of violence in Irish society.

The salary is not very good, particularly when one considers the cost of accommodation nowadays.

However, it is a secure job and is still quite a respected position in Irish society.

Any Gards that I have ever interacted with, did not come across as university dropouts; quite the contrary, in fact.

Competition for a training place in Templemore is bound to be very stiff; and the training itself is rigorous and demanding.

Being a Gard is no stroll in the park; not to be underestimated.

On the contrary, your post is absolutely a direct slur against the Gardai. It shows a shocking bias towards them as well as a total lack of understanding of what Gardai actually do in their day to day policing. To say it’s a safe job is beyond ridiculous, the numbers of serious assaults they suffer proves that. Shift work is classified as a carcinogen all on it’s own. If I was a Garda, I would be seriously insulted by your comment. Maybe you should go talk to a Garda with an open mind and delve into what they do, then come back and see what your comment reads like.

Can you imagine what would happen in society if the Garda Siochana did not exist at all?

There would be anarchy and uncontained violence, or would there be?

People would just take the law into their own hands and exact instant justice, as they saw fit, justified or otherwise.

Interesting how Gardaí are there to enforce laws but if you asked a Garda to quote the relevant law they would look at you as if you have 2 heads,They don't know the law but yet they enforce the law how does that work, they operate on feelings and suspicions when there is no hard proof a crime has been committed, they will also trample upon peoples rights as if God himself has bestowed them with special powers..

Being in a police force is a very tough job.

Dame Cressida Dick has just resigned from the Met: London's Metropolitan Police Force, after having lost the confidence of London's Lord Mayor.

The police in England is structured very differently than Ireland's single national force.

But the pressures are similar; terrorism, ODCs, multicultural society, etc.

Frankly, I am surprised she toughed it out for so long!

You normally find that senior police, who no longer interface with the general public usually have a detailed knowledge of statutes and relevant case law aka precedents.

Junior police are briefed carefully before charges are preferred on suspect.
