When I was little my mother bought a Dolly Parton record and tortured me with "Jeanie's afraid of the dark". It's a tough listen, even still.

A Highland Lullaby by The Corries with the haunting voice of Paddie Bell. It's the story of a baby that vanishes when the mother goes out to gather blaeberries, billberries as we'd know them.

The other is a love song to a boatman, fear a bhata, but her voice gives it a really sad sound.

Check out Damien Dempsey's version also.

When you love someone by James TW. I just think it hits the nail on the head when it comes to the pain endured by the family when love turns bad

Downtown by Petula Clark from 1964.

I used to repeatedly hear this song on a Saturday afternoon, when I was being brought back to an unhappy environment, from one where I was happy and active and tolerated and wanted!
