Superstitions

By *rown Eyed Beauties OP   Couple

In and around Louth, Meath, Cavan

Sitting eating dinner yesterday and a magpie landed on the fence . As always I waved at it …. My daughter laughed and call me silly …. Then I said the rhyme to her . Didn’t know she has never heard it before. …..

Other ones I have that may not be as well known

Passing someone on the stairs

Putting new shoes on a table

Taking salt from someone else’s hand

Splitting poles

Female first to wish good luck with a new car

Moving on a Saturday

I am so superstitious , anyone any weird superstitions ?

Somewhere in Co. Down

Yep I wave at magpies as well .

I don't open an umbrella indoors.

I won't put boots on a table either.

And yes I tend to avoid walking under ladders as well.

I'm more superstitious than I thought

My dad kicked a black cat in the church the day I was getting married - guess what, the marriage didn't last.

Moral of the story - don't get married

I'm going to wish everyone well on their new car, regardless of whether they got one or not - just in case

Friday the 13th - just stay in bed

Not walking on cracks on the footpath

If I don’t bless myself when I pass a graveyard I think something bad will happen to someone I love (I’m not religious)

I'm not really superstitious, no surgery on a Saturday is another one but I did & survived

I do touch wood though to stop the bad things from happening. I should really be luckier

I'm not superstitious anymore, mainly because I couldn't figure out how superstitions worked. I mean for example, does the magpie know that you greeted it with a wave? Somehow I doubt it, as I doubted all superstition, and I quit them.

Nenagh / South Dublin

I would never remember to do all the thing related to superstitions like this...

End up waving at a ladder and putting a magpie on a table

I'm familiar with all those, but don't subscribe to any of them. To me, you make your own luck to a great extent, and shit just happens sometimes.

Bullshite the whole lot of them, except the magpies one, that's true, my cousins, uncles, next door neighbour was struck by lightning in a field and all because he didn't salute a magpie.

Flatearthers the lot of them.

The earth is flat.

Water is 80% of the earth, the water is not carbonated, therefore the earth is in fact flat.

Pisrogues (not sure of the spelling) I believe the superstitions were called in Ireland.

The only one is even numbers, they're evil. I always use odd numbers where I can. Maybe I'm just odd myself. Mrs

Careful now. You don't want to be accused of having your head up your bum for growing up in Ireland and not knowing all these superstitions.

Making your own luck includes lots of fibre and staying well hydrated

I salute the magpie and any volume has to be on an even number

It seems to be one of those things where some know it and others don't. It was a common one down home but a lot of my mates from Dublin didn't know it. My friend from Clare ón the other hand did know it.

No shoes on the table....

Giving a sharp object as a present to a friend...

Rain at a funeral(good sign)

Handing someone a knife..bad luck

Getting keys of a new house on Friday is good luck

Salute magpies...

Waving at magpies

No new shoes in a table

If you go in the front door of the house you leave through that door.

Walk under a ladder

Bless yourself passing a graveyard

Don't overtake a funeral cortege

Move into a house on a Friday

If you put an item of clothing on inside out, leave it that way ( now I do this with my knickers when I get dressed in the dark) hasnt brought me much luck.

Don't believe in superstition or higher powers, but I do certain things that make me feel like they'll help me be better prepared and more in control of the day or event ahead.
