I think the societal context has a direct influence on how we treat each other and how we treat ourselves. Society has become more callous, selfish and self-interested; overall we were kinder to ourselves an others in the past.

I'm not sure thata 100% truethe callousness and self interest is just more evident and less subtle.

The "community" in Irish culture to me from speaking to older generations has always seemed like an information gathering exercise.

And let's face it there was alot going on in our communities that people wouldn't or couldn't speak about, that I wouldn't consider a community looking out for each other

In relation to the OP.

I don't think that's a great definition of kindness.

There is a change in dynamics and relationships when you care about someone.

I try to be respectful and polite to randomness but I don't treat them the same as those I care about, it would come off as disingenuous to me

I'm kinder to myself now than I've ever been. I never saw it as a thing until 7 or 8 years ago and confused it with selfishness but once I got through the guilt barrier it was grand.

I completely misread the OP

I probably treat myself better than anyone I care about.

I think it would be hard to find a balance where you treat yourself exactly the same as others. And I'd much rather treat myself better than worse

I don't. I'm too busy caring for others to put myself first. Be it with my time or financially. I know I should do more for myself because life is so short but it's often just not possible.

I have been working on it for the last 7 years before that i couldn't love myself all that great. I was so self centered now i just make sure to use more self care and not to be so hard on myself.

Saying no and people pleasing is gone from my life more or less now. I reach out and allow myself to be reached in return, a listen ear certainly can help others in strive. Giving back to society what society has given takes me out of the equation when i do this it helps me love myself more.
