i travel all over

I saw this thread in the lounge and liked it a lot

I'm wondering if maybe those that want to would be open about theirs on the thread and help others with their knowledge and experiences.

And how does it affect your fab life?

Do you tell people you're chatting to so they know that you could potentially need to cancel a social or meet if the illness gets the better of you that day? Do you worry they'll think you're making excuses?

Do you feel like you're not letting it dictate your life as you're still able to get out there and misbehave or socialise?

I’m autistic although I don’t class it as an illness. It makes it difficult to approach people in life and on fab because I feel socially awkward and never know what to say. This is what is making it difficult to make good connections and when I don’t or can’t I get very down because it’s a reminder that I’m not normal and never will be.

Awk sure what's "normal" man. Everyone has their own quirks and idiosyncrasies. Confidence is key. Own it. Be your best self.

What is normal? You are you and that's all you need to be.

I guarantee your friends and family wouldn't want you to change one thing about yourself and you shouldn't change for anyone else

Interactions on this place can be very slow for lads just have a bit of craic on the forum, dont expect much and enjoy your life offline as thats were we all should be living as fully as we can!

Our youngest is autistic and she is normal just as you are. Just because you dont conform to neurotypical expectations doesnt make you any less normal than me. Embrace your uniqueness as i will teach her and eff societies expectations

Normal is over rated, and very few people are truly just normal. Try to embrace what makes you unique .Being autistic is part of you and enhances who you are and how you see the world. Not everyone is a social butterfly but that doesn't mean people won't like you or interact with you.

Thanks for all the positive comments folks! My son is also autistic like me so that gives us an extra connection lol

If I make a connection on here I do tend to grab it and maybe go overkill on by messaging a lot which can probably come across as overbearing and a bit crazy. But it isn’t, it’s just me. I’m just excited at having made a connection with someone that I go whole hog at it.

Good for her! My son is in mainstream school and is thriving. Maybe because it is a smaller school but it has been the making of him. He’s super smart but needed to work on his socialisation. Not he has a circle of very good friends who seem to get him, and he loves it.

"Define normal

"

Normal health is usually defined in medical tomes, such as Gray's Anatomy, as being in a state homeostatic equilibrium.

The renowned American- Hungarian psychiatrist Thomas Szasz, had some interesting views on normal mental functioning.

Regrettably, he is now deceased, but his lectures can be watched online. He was iconoclastic.

My lil lad is on the spectrum. He is happy with his life and that is all I can do for him. When we were getting the diagnosis the psychologist was asking all these questions about his behaviour and how he interacts with people and my answers were the same as his lol. Normal is different to everyone.

This has been a very useful thread....possibly not getting the initial expected answers, but showing that we never really know what is going on in people's lives, what they maybe dealing with on a daily basis.

I applaud all who shared, but Fab has often shown itself to be a caring group, we have an initial shared interest & yet we can empathise with others, there can be more to Fab than sex.

So proud of you fabbers, no stigma showing anywhere and a sign our society is moving towards accepting and understanding that people are different, there is no normal. If we are as patient and understanding of people in society then the world is a better place.

What a lovely thread. Anytime a thread like this is posted its amazing to read as noone knows what others are going through, been through etc

I had my son at 19 and o ly 14 yrs later was diagnosed with post natal depression I hid it that well. In Feb 2020 I fell apart in a hotel room in belfast and only that I had a few drinks on me and wouldn't drive there could have been a very different outcome.

Thankfully in the last year I have realised people do care and I loved. I still have days when I just think what's the point but keeping a gratitude journal and working on myself has kept me going.

My motto in life now is just be kind

"Does getting stabbed count ??

Was left with lung scarring and some heart muscle scarring/ hardening.

I am in reasonable shape and no problem keeping up with the young guys in work. Used to get some blood and a nice gurgling noise every now and then coming from my lung but that had settled down.

By the way I see we are full of understanding and tolerance. I don’t know if you call it an illness but definitely injury with long term effects. I do have to keep an eye on myself. Be aware of blood pressure as if it became high it has the possibility to cause very serious problems. But thankfully I live a healthy lifestyle so generally physically and mentally in a good place.

I do know a few people who had a similar experience and have become hermit like and withdrawn, won’t go outside after dark, won’t socialise etc.

I would like to be true to myself. I had a wonderful childhood. My father died in tragic circumstances, he took a heart attack one evening and fell in the canal and was missing for 4 weeks over Christmas period 1986. My younger brother identity the body, but I never got to see it. I went to Australia for a year and had a great time. When I came back I got myself into a mess and had break down. I made an amazing recovery, I got a degree and a accountancy qualification. But the last 4 years with my wife's illness and my respiratory problems have been real stressful. Since June I've been under a lot of stress. I try to get out for a walk and keeping going. Hope I'm not upsetting anyone. Your health is your wealth.

It can take a while for things like that to hit you and when it does it can be hard.

I know one person very well who lost both parents and partner within a few months. But had young children so I suppose it kept them busy and no time to think. Was a few years later and they had a complete breakdown as everything came back. Luckily some close friends were there to help and support and just be there with the Irish solution to everything, a mug of tea and a chat about nothing.

He goes in every couple of years and gets a balloon down and it stretches it out for a while.

Will pm you if that’s ok "

Of course

"I have m.s.

Does it affect you significantly ?

It can do yes. My balance can be very poor at times. Tiredness is a killer. And I’m weak down 1 side of my body

And does it come and go ? As in periods of things going well then a deterioration ? And anything you have found helpful in case anyone else is reading ?

Thank you and the other posters for sharing . Hard to know what to say sometimes . I have read a bit about empathy vs sympathy but I think it’s difficult to actually put yourself in other people’s shoes . Hope you are comfortable as much of the time as possible "

Ya I have periods of feeling like I can do anything. But the majority of the time I feel like the whole world is against me

I’m secondary progressive. I hope your wife is doing well. It’s a huge eye opener

It is, very stressful for my wife and I have found it hard too cope with. We had some prayers, about 2 to 3 weeks ago I had to go to hospital for a test, my wife saw me to the door. When I got to the gate I realised I forgot my phone, when I got back to the house she had fallen to the floor. She tried to move but could not lift her right leg and lost her balance. Took me ages to lift her up, she hurt her ribs. I made her a cuppa, she was ok. Do not know how I did test later on. She has good and bad days. She is great the way she keeps going. She gets tired. I do my best to look after her she is my best friend ever. That was the real reason I did not attend social on 10th in Dublin. Hope I'm not upsetting you and that you are well

"I would like to be true to myself.

You’re not upsetting anyone . Takes a lot of courage to talk about these things

It can take a while for things like that to hit you and when it does it can be hard.

I know one person very well who lost both parents and partner within a few months. But had young children so I suppose it kept them busy and no time to think. Was a few years later and they had a complete breakdown as everything came back. Luckily some close friends were there to help and support and just be there with the Irish solution to everything, a mug of tea and a chat about nothing."

Thanks for your post

I’ve a number of conditions that could be debilitating if I let them be. They have altered my life in a way that no one can ever understand but it’s my choice not to let it define or limit me. Hospital stays are the norm and my friends off here have been absolutely phenomenal to me.

I have a few conditions one particularly affects my blood pressure. One particular night during a fantastic night of play my blood pressure started to drop and I started to become very unwell. Out of embarrassment I stopped all play rather abruptly and the other ended up leaving. I felt so bad that I didn’t come clean and admit why I stopped play so abruptly and to this day still have regrets
