"This is a simple process, if you are not VAT registered and buy something outside of Ireland but in the EU you pay the VAT in the country of purchase. If you buy outside the EU you are liable for Vat and Duty, rates vary depending on the commodity code. It's understandable that the shipping company charges a handling charge as its takes them longer with more paperwork at their end." I understand the vat charge.. If the item is 3.70 including delivery/shipping and vat then why would an post want 3.50 for a "customs handling fee" upon delivery.. Shipping/delivery has already been paid..

"If a non EU seller is registered with Revenue to collect tax at the point of sale then VAT will be included when you pay and declared as such pre delivery. However, not all sellers are set up to do this and you can't insist that they do this, so you will find that many items will be stopped and and assessed for duties and tax for you to pay. While this has always been the case for most non EEA goods it wasn't as rigorously enforced until Brexit came alone. As such, yeah you can blame the Brits "

I am a VAT registered Irish business with a UK amazon business account. Pre-brexit I could buy stuff VAT free from the UK. Now I can't. Estimated VAT and duty on UK goods is paid on checkout and is not reclaimable. You can however use a European amazon site to buy without VAT. I use the German site.

"Bought shoes online from Ireland. Got txt from An post to pay VAT. Thought it was strange. As there’s was no excise charge just VAT. It was only like €3 or something like that. Clicked on the linked and got txt message from bank asking to confirm if authorised €500 to some company called Pegasus. Went to an post to see if legit she said yes and went to check said that an post email expired like a month ago. I did purchase something from Uk and paid custom excise. Went to bank straight away. They blocked my acc and changed my card for me. " It sounds like that wasn't a text from an post at all.

"This thread is rather confusing. Anyhow some simple rules make online shopping life easier: Buy from Irish sites Don't support evil Bezos so stay away from Amazon Don't buy from British sites - (sorry Brits but you voted to leave not us) Whenever possible buy from EU sites Be aware of the tons of scam an post text messages/emails, don't click on any link. Exceptions may apply if you get items shipped to a parcel motel in NI or if you have a "private" courier aka friend travelling from said country. " While I agree with ur opinion on Amazon and its owner I am afraid to tell say he (Bezos) has his finger in lots of pies, data centers are one of his biggest earners at the moment So even perving on here is earning him coin

"Anyone waiting ages for deliveries from abroad? I'm still waiting on a package which seems to be stuck in Dublin 'arrivals' for the past two weeks." Yeah stuff coming in from outside the EU is taking ages. The brexit effect and a shortage of shipping containers, plus that ship that got stuck in the suez canal. Cumulatively its a nightmare.

" Unfortunately if you use ebay most of the sellers are UK based so Irish buyers are wasting their time.. Vat and duty make it not worth their while..
