For a multitude of reasons, I have a hunch that this Christmas is going to be particularly miserable: energy price rises, supply chain problems, empty supermarket shelves, state benefits changes, etc.

The festive season has no relevance for me from a religious perspective, but some potential metts or socials would brighten things up considerably.

How are you going to uplift your Christmas cheer?

I've never been a fan of Christmas. I dislike all the extravagance, fuss, stress, expense, forced time spent with relatives etc.

It upsets me that the real meaning is forgotten.

I hate the thought of the debt people get into for it.

Last few years I've helped out at a local food bank, and it's really opened my eyes to how some people spend Christmas

Now my children are all adults with partners of their own, I'm off for 10 days in the sun over Christmas and New Year.

I never used to enjoy it until kids came along . This is the last year of both believing in Santa so they ll make the most of it

I find when it’s my turn to cook for Relatives (as it is this year ) that it becomes a bit more stressful and all about ‘will others enjoy the meal’.

But at least one can travel between Xmas and new year

Also are we allowed to mention the c word before Halloween ?

Energy increases will be small, supermarket shelves will be sticked, buy early to avoid missing out on the best presents, state benefits won't reduce, in fact they will get a Xmas bonus again. Religion is irrelevant to enjoying the festive season.

Everything will be fine.

Normally I find Xmas hard and lonely but after working the last 5 Xmas/new year and the year and a half we all have been through I'm going to enjoy it with my family and friends, this year it will b about spending time with them, we don't do big pressies never have.

Lots of families won't have loved ones to enjoy Xmas with this year, lots of families will have family fighting cancer and don't know what the year has ahead of them.

If costs have risen too much and you're on a fixed income...do you have enough time to budget for increased costs of energy

I volunteer to help feed others on Christmas day and to be honest its makes my Christmas

If you're lonely on the day can you volunteer for a charity to get out and help others which would help you

I’m actually looking forward to it this year. After lasts years wash out I’ll get to see the smiles on Christmas morning as my nephews open their presents. Maybe even get a few nights out. This will be a good one

I've spent the last 10 years on my own at Christmas and it doesnt get any easier.

Working in retail I only get the two days off have had offers from friends to spend the day with them but never do as it's a time for family and I'm not family and hate the thought of people feeling sorry for me. Spent my first christmas after splitting up with my ex with family and while it was a great day at the end of the day

I still went home to an empty house which was a killer so I vowed then never to do that again. Thinking of volunteering this christmas but not sure how to go about it.

I had the same last year after a seperation and was pretty form Xmas eve & day even with family around. Nervous about this year for the same reason but I don't think I'd try not to worry about anyone feeling sorry for me and if they are good friends I guarantee they aren't, more just extending a nice gesture to a good friend.

If your going to volunteer a soup kitchen or a homeless shelter would be very rewarding and a generous thing to do. Hope you find something to do that brings you joy

Just one further thing OP

If you're afraid your budget doesn't stretch this year due to all the extra increased costs don't be ashamed or embarrassed to ask for help

We have a number of charities in Dublin that give out food parcels every week to those that need help and Christmas will be especially busy

I'm sure you have some in Northern Ireland so look them up and ask

I think loneliness is a feeling rather than a situation . I have felt very secure alone at times and my loneliest times have been at times when I have been surrounded by people . Valentine’s and Christmas are constructed societally in a way which excludes some people but we don’t need to buy into that . We can make of them what we want.

Christmas can be whatever you make it. I've had two Christmas's since my separation to which I was not looking forward to.

I owned it!!

I had Christmas eve with the kids. Christmas Dinner on my Todd and collect the kids later and bring them to my family with me.

It works!! Actually is less stressful than family Dinner together.

Me having Dinner on my own was a bigger deal to others than to me.

All how you deal with it.

I work most xmasses by choice and take month of January off. Xmas lost a lot of its appeal after my kids grew up and I got divorced. The first 4 years were horrible being on my own.

Then I realised how lucky I was that I had a job, a roof over my head and money in my pocket. So now each year at xmas I donate food,clothes and presents to local charities like Vincent de Paul ,A lending hand or Path. There plenty of other charities around the country as well, so maybe this year some fellow fabbers might help those less fortunate.

Gotta say I always loved Christmas. It costs a fortune and can be alot of work but I still love everything about it.

I fully get why so many dont. Just a suggestion, why don't those who spend it alone create a group and do a Christmas 2 or 3 day social. Book a hotel, have a meal together and a few drinks. Even do a secret Santa.

I personally believe it's way too consumer driven, like many other holidays throughout the year. I don't buy into that crap

For me the last few years were difficult due to separation. When you've gone through loss, this time of year becomes more difficult.

There's been a settling into a new routine and with supportive family and friends, Christmas is a time to spend quality time with loved ones. I make an extra effort for the children so they have loving, fun and happy memories to look back on... everything else is just noise...

Haven't been to one in Frankfurt... Cologne, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Berlin, and a few smaller town ones...they sure have the ability to spread the Christmas cheer... nothing like a mulled wine or hot chocolate with friends or family while browsing hand crafted decorations...

The continentals know how to do a show for the season... Zurich, Brussels, Vienna, Salzburg etc...

I don't do Christmas and haven't in years.

December and January are the worst months of the year. I've lost numerous family members in and around Christmas and New year time including both parents, both godparents, a cousin and an uncle and until about 5 years ago I only ever had Christmas Day off so it's always been a case of the sooner it's over the better and this year won't be any different regardless of how empty the shelves are.

Christmas is the most boring day ever. If it wasn’t for the kids stay in bed for the day tbh. I am blessed my Christmas’s go relatively well the amount of people at home Christmas Day absolutely living in fear is just horrific. The debt people put themselves in is absolutely stupid.

To impress the local neighbours and family kids really don’t care if u spend 200 or 2000 I think

I'll probably be working Christmas like I have done for most of my working life. But I don't mind it's just another day.

If I'm off I'll enjoy it with some of my family and then go home and sit in front of the fire and enjoy my evening with my dogs for company.

I don't mind Christmas we don't go mad spending ridiculous amounts on presents we don't need or copious amounts of food we end up throwing out. I don't believe the shops will be empty or anymore empty than they normally are on Christmas time anyhow.

Definitely all bout giving the kids great memories, it's them they'll remember in years to come not what present Santa brought which is why I love elf on the shelf & the excitement he brings daily with the lil un's wondering what divilment he'll get up to that night

for another note as a few mentioned been on their own maybe if not volunteering they should meet up with fellow fabbers in similar situations for a day or two n make it a special one this year

Despite all that is going on around us I am looking forward to Christmas. It always has been a time of the year that I have loved. This year for me will be no different as we will still keep up all the old traditions that makes it as special as it always has been. I'll enjoy having my family and friends around me and for me that is my Christmas.

The two things I really enjoy each Christmas are: The Snowman that is broadcast on Channel 4, although I am not keen on the version introduced by David Bowie; and the best Christmas classic, It's a Wonderful Life, with James Stewart and Donna Reed.

Regrettably, the overconsumption is unnecessary, as is the amount of debt family folk acquire.

I have never been a bit fan of christmas and more so in the last few years. Not looking forward to this Christmas but it is what it is. Make the most of it.
