Who’s the greatest sport person of all time ? Is it Nadia for developing the concept of perfection ? Redgrave for longevity (despite his health issues) ? Phelps for sheer statistics ? Ali for the cultural impact ? Or someone else ?

It's impossible to say who's the greatest across all sports as each takes different skills and attributes. People can have their favourites but its all subjective

Greatest is impossible to define.

My favorite sports person of all time is Ronaldo (Brazil) just because of the sheer dynamism and coolness of him at a very impressionable time in my life.

There have been more successful, better players and people who have donr far more important things outside of a sporting context...but just how I felt watching him and even now thinking back are great memories

To be honest some sports get way more attention than others it's just too hard to say.

Out of world wide fame and legacy I agree with Rub. Ali is in the history books. But ya have to also look at the likes of Manny Pacquiao. The amount of actual charity work he does at home. Outside of his record achievements Etc.

That's just boxing and there are so many more , even our own Katie Taylor.

Then look across all other sports

Phil Taylor

Usain Bolt

Novak Djokovic and so on.

I think it's too wide to have a GOAT

Hard to compare across different sports but you would have to go with Ali. Not just for boxing skills but the whole package. Had the charisma and everybody knows who Mohammad Ali is. Probably the most famous person of all time.

Wayne Gretzky.

But there are too many to list, although to consider athletes who have “moved the sport” May thoughts:

Tiger Woods. For moving the golf world to a new phase.

Katie Taylor. For elevating Female professional boxing along side the men’s sport.

Mark Spitz prior to Phelps.

Bo Jackson. Multi sport (NFL and MLB) phenomenal athlete.

Michael Jordan and before him Dr J. Moved the NBA to new levels.

Sachin Tendulkar. A billion plus fans in one country alone!

Thanks for the topic, the list could go on and will be hijacked by me for chat with pals…..

Now I could be wrong, but yes, in financial terms, but is that greatness? Joe Canning has probably put in more effort!

Tiger Woods and Messi for me. Tiger had a similar record to Federer with 4 majors to compete in every year, but to manage it on different courses with a lot more jeopardy takes him beyond Roger. As for Messi, he has been consistently breathtaking for 15 years. He is an alien while Ronaldo is merely the best of the mortals.

Not really, he has very slightly more goals, having played two years longer, and one extra champions League. But those stats are all Ronaldo has in this context, he can't compare with Messi for magic, talent, awe etc.

How many premier league or serie a titles or player of the years in those leagues does messi have again.

For a start Messi has 10 league titles and 6 ballon d'Ors, and that is beating Ronaldo at his strengths; stats. As a pure footballer though, no contest

Those 'Facts' are quantity based, Messi has a better blend of quantity and quality, Ronaldo should be flattered to be compared to him. On this basis, Gerrard would be be better than Zidane.

Ronaldo is unbelievable with how he has done it in so many different countries winning titles and not always the best teams, just look where Juventus are now without him 5 games and 5 points!?

Look what happens UTD when he doesn't play, they lose against West Ham, Hammers did deserve it in fairness.

Ronaldo became a great, Messi just had it from the time he put his boots on, as much as I hate to admit it as a Liverpool fan, haha, there's something you got to admire about his work ethic to get that good but definitely Messi is more skillful so it's easy to say he's better but if you think about how hard you have to work like Ronaldo did to get where he's got to in his craft you HAVE to respect that AND he has the record for International goals apart from maybe today's Portgual team you'd be hard pressed to name all the players he's played with cause there wasn't many top players in teams he's played with in his Portgual playing days....that I can think of anyways!?

Gerrard...Champions League medal 1, Micahel Owen...0

But the best has to be either Maradonna, Pele or George Best, they did it in the days when teams were out to break your legs, nevermind get the ball of you!

ALI was the greatest of all time but he didn't just box smart in the ring, outside of it too, his team kept him away from fighters they knew he would lose against but that's part of boxing doesn't take away from the inspiration of the man. And here who the HELL has dubbed that muppet CMcGr the king of talk, he isn't the dirt on the chewing gum stuck to the end of Ali's shoe when it comes to talking a good game, dude had it down to a T! "I'm so fast I turned off the light switch and was in bed before the lights went out" haha classic!

Best ever golfer is Jack Nicklaus unlike Tiger, he could drive, haha, ah no but Tiger is up there next to him though

Rugby.....now that's a tough one, Jonah Lomu maybe, David Campese? Jonny Wilkinson? Our own Brian O'Driscill was a beast. Was unplayable in his days when he first came along and when the game changed he adapted to it and then as he aged he had to adapt again, class.

Tennis: Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, Nadal, Djokovic, Aggassi, Becker, McEnroe, Connors....Martina Navratilova, Stefi Graff, Sernea Williams..... Radacanu!? Has to be the future one so many tennis greats to mention hard to say who was best there like the rugby.

Phil Taylor, never be another one!

I don't know how those guys do what they do with darts I go for treble 20 and I can't even hit the board! haha

Cycling is just a competition of who has the best drugs! Staying away from that one, hahaha.

Horseracing, fecking horse does most of the work! Shergar is the greatest there.

GAA, sorry to say, I don't know enough to say anyone apart from Gooch....hurling though what a game that is!

Usain Bolt damn that man is fast, ha.

Ah here too many sports to decide who is the best of all.....obviously!

Sport is sport.

It matters not a jot.

When someone transcends the sporting field to really touch peoples lives in a real way is when you talk about what great is.

Can anyone imagine what it was like to be black in 60s U.S. and see and hear the beautiful articulate free thinking Muhammad Ali dominate the world and standing up,and getting jailed, for what he believed in.

Ali was the greatest of all time and always will be.

I agree Ronaldo is a great player but the Juve example you gave is terrible.

They won the league the previous 7 years before he arrived and the Italian Cup the previous 4. They haven't won the cup since he arrived and finished 4th in a weak league last year.

Their champions league record had also gotten worse.

Ronaldo is the GOAT footballer IMO but not close to overall sports person . Very little cultural impact , solo domination , reinvention of the sport , overcoming adversity

Definitely a case to be made for him. I just had an issue with the idea Juve were somehow a small club and not the massive dominating force in Italy before his arrival.

Tbh GOAT debates are pointless to a degree there are so many variables between generations and even positions etc...

Ronaldo is phenomenal but there have been other players that gave me far more moments of sheer bliss looking at a game in disbelief and for me that's what a great sports person does (Ronaldo included)
