Christ I just met in Old lady driving the wrong way around a very busy roundabout, bless her she looked oblivious and lost. Which got me thinking. Is there a sell by date where ppl just shouldn't be behind the wheel of a deadly weapon when you consider everything about road safety. I know this would be highly unpopular that one you reach a certain age that you can't just renew your licence without some competence test.

Honestly believe its for the best but social isolation for some would be very hard

Some amount of killer crashes on motorways with elderly men driving on the wrong side of the motorway

I know the last one wasnt but the ones before were

My parents are in their 80's and my dad gets lost going anywhere he hasn't been in years even Dublin airport confuses him and yet he's as sharp as a tac

I now bring them if they're going away weekends or anywhere apart from their weekly shopping

Maybe a yearly assessment rather than a set age

I think it would be a good idea that you have to take a refresher driving coarse every few years, we have it for the vehicle’s so why not for the drivers.

. I too have met cars on the wrong side of roundabouts and it is shocking when it happens.

I think the over 80's need a doctors cert with their renewal application and need to renew yearly. With Covid though, they got 3 years.

It's not them that cause bad accidents though, it's the younger, less experienced drivers so I don't have an issue with them driving, it's often their only lifeline to the outside world

You're not wrong but as a road safety issue it's nothing compared to the number of perfectly competent drivers that choose to drive too fast

You'd be surprised actually how often this happens, I work on the roads and see this too often for my own liking

Its gas to think about it but to work on a building site you need a safe pass that has to be renewed every 4 years but to drive you get a licence for 10 years and as long as you renew before it expires you can continue to drive for a long as you want. We're literally bombarded with safety on almost every aspect of life nowadays but then we turn a blind eye to unpopular decisions that need to be addressed.

There are some 80+ drivers licenced to drive HGV's, from back when they handed them out without needing a test!

I knew a woman who was still driving up to her 92nd birthday. She had been driving for 77 years and never had any issues apart from possibly driving slower as she got older.

On her 92nd birthday she was going to meet a friend for coffee, pulled out of her own driveway and hit a passing RUC car.

She wasn't injured but gave up her licence that day and died 6 months later.

Her family said she was never the same because she couldn't get out and about.

My neighbor lives on his own aged 94 and just upgraded to a brand new car and drives round trip 10 miles to town each day. It’s his lifeline and as good as any.

As far as i know u have to pass a medical exam fairly regularly once u get past a certain age.

In saying that are plenty in around my age group and a bit older that cant seem to use roundabouts and dont seem to know what white lines are for

I know family members who would be lost having to stop driving at a cerain age theyre so independent

Funnily enough I think it was our maybe a Toyota yaris, I can't rightly remember. The poor woman drive around twice and all exits were blocked from ppl who didn't want to pull out in front of her. Very sad but at the same time it's dangerous.
