I recently had to pay the annual landscaping fees for my estate.

It had to be cash.

I can't actually remember the last time before it that I used an ATM and holding a bundle of notes felt weird.

Yah! Takes 2 minutes, you will likely get a verification code from your bank when you add the card & after that your set

You can set a certain card as you default btw ie your main account.

Then if you want to use another card to pay for a seperate transaction just select that from your Google wallet

The other side of that though is the shop isn’t having to handle large amounts of cash. My local branch of BOI is one of the ones closing so any shops won’t have to hold onto large sums of money until they get to lodge it somewhere

Revolute on the phone all the way. Way safer than card or cash as phone has to be unlocked and you can lock a Revolute account in seconds if you can't find the card and unlock it again when you do.

Transfer what you need when you need it.

Great for travel as fees for foreign exchanges are way better or keep an account in more than one currency.

Hardly used cash since covid started.

Only ever top up Revolut by what I need.

I'm not sure where you get tinfoil hat out of this!? Of course the revenue know what you earn!

I'd be surprised if you didn't have family or friends who do the odd "nixer" for cash in whatever trade they operate in, and plenty of those trades out there - be that fixing cars, work on houses, gardens, odd jobs, the hairdressing industry etc whereby people, particularly in these trying times of high unemployment rates, earn a little extra without declaring it to be able to put their children through college, pay for that boiler to be fixed, fill up the oil tank, earn the spending money for that well deserved holiday or, god forbid, to spice up that state pension after you've been screwed over for redundancy or Lord knows what!

Do you never get tradespeople in the house and a cheaper rate for paying in cash?! I do! I'm sure plenty here do too! You keep paying everything with card alongside everyone else, cash is gone as are cash deals and all these things are taxed, taxed, taxed and the only people profiting are the revenue and the small people trying to survive, hanging on by a thread are left to rot as they always are!

Never used a phone app to pay for anything mainly because I always seem to be stuck in a queue behind someone with an app that doesn't work.

Lidl last week with only one till open and one person in front of me took almost 15 mins to clear.

Three or four attempts with the app before digging through her bag to find her card. It wouldn't tap and she tried her pin number a few times before leaving her goods to run out to the car for cash. I normally use a card but always carry cash for anything under a fiver and to avoid a situation like above.

Have you ever been to Lidl or Tesco and shortly after you get a pop up message asking for your shopping experience? I know it's linked to your location on the phone and not the bank card but I find those things creepy and it shows you how far we have come. Or you google zimmerframe and next time you're reading ie an online newspaper you get zimmerframe adds.

I've nothing to hide if you want to say so (beside some cash deals that cut out the vat) but I also don't want to be traced for every step I do, nor do I want to be constantly targeted. I've no Tesco/Lidl/Aldi/Dunnes etc. club card for the same reason. I don't do Facebook for the same reason etc.

Almost every data is being analysed nowadays for all sorts of purposes, from simple target marketing, over prosecution up to politcal manipulation. Now and then it emerges in personal data scandals, leaks and hacks and it gives you a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes and the scale of it. If you don't/can't see that and if it doesn't make you slightly uneasy, well what can I say...

I urge everyone who enjoys being able to get better cash deals with getting their motors, homes and gardens fixed, their hair and face and nails done etc to USE CASH - wherever HUMANLY possible!!! Ditch the card, wherever humanly possible!

Cash is king. I only use card if I'm purchasing online, purchasing electronics or equipment I need to be able to have better comeback on with regards to warranty or my direct debit bills for phone and electricity.

Your entitlement of course.

I believe a healthy critical attitude is important to keep things at bay, the past shows how easily things can go wrong. Unfortunately any concern nowadays is easily labelled as tinfoil hat stuff and drives division, which is in itself rather worrisome. Personal freedom, personal data protection, freedom of speech, freedom of information etc. are things we take for granted but they get constantly attacked in one way or the other and we should carefully watch over them, they are building blocks of our democracy and important to achieve/maintain a somehow 'equal' society ie a cashless society marginalises those further that are already on the edges.

Yeah and if you link that Revolut card to your phone, it's still safer than carrying the card. Because if your phone gets stolen, they need your fingerprint to unlock your phone to tap it. It doesn't tap if the phone is locked.

Also, you can now log into Revolut or online banking and freeze your cards immediately (without cancelling them) so they can't be used at all. As well as logging into your phone remotely to lock or wipe it.

A stolen card can be tapped up to 100 euro PLUS used for online shopping (since they have ALL your details, which they wouldn't have via your phone) before you'd even know it was missing.

What you are charged depends on the bank/post office/credit union etc you bank with. Believe me, it pays to shop around where banking fees are concerned, just like it does when you're renewing your car insurance, when your mobile/landline contract or electric/gas supply contract expires etc!

Switch to a bank with no fees.....such as N26. No excuse to stay with an Irish bank that charges bank fees that is using legacy IT tech. Irish banks are playing serious catchup with the likes of N26/Revolut in relation to App tech......and the Irish banks charge you for the service Feck That!

That's based on the assumption you own a phone with the fingerprint function.

Do that many have a phone with that function or use it if they have it - I don't . I rarely see anyone around me not tapping a code or pattern rather than using the fingerprint if they use that security layer at all!?!

Isn't it as easy to lose or have a phone stolen as it is your purse/wallet/handbag? Suppose it depends on the individual. I carry my phone separately from my purse.

Not sure how easy it is to hack a phone and get into the apps. I'd say it's easier to get conned out of money with other scams than having a phone stolen to use apps for stealing money.

Anyway, I carry cash, card and phone. The function to use the tap service on my cards is disabled!!! I'd advise anyone to have that function disabled for security purposes!!! and my phone has a lock on it, all my vulnerable apps have an additional but different lock on it to boost security. Also when I shop online with my credit card, I have to respond to a push notification on my phone, or no purchase!

I'm the kind to have a little cash for emergencies hidden in places should I ever lose or have purse stolen.

wise words indeed

"is there card charges only when u spend above a certain amount?

Lol, no, but the amount you're charged depends which bank you're with.

I pay €72 a year for my account and have credit cards, mortgage with the same bank and all my kids are with them too

I just prefer using a local bank instead of just online in case anything goes wrong

If you were using cash ud be able to spend that €72 on spoiling ur self instead of paying a bank shareholder a dividend

No bank provides free banking they are in the game to make money thats were they were set up for also using a card gives some body some where another cent that they dont break a sweat for

While not condoning the black market there are group who pay taxes and fail to qualify for susi grants and such like while some with property worth millions do and can get full aid to put their children trough college go figure "
