Frightening scenes of Taliban fighters entering a new area on motorcycles on C4 earlier. People just running from their homes to escape. At what point should the UN go in to restore democratic consent or should we, the UN ignore. I understand why the Americans left, they shouldn’t be the police force of global justice but who should? If this chat isn’t for you just ignore and move on.

Such an ethical minefield . Afghanistan will always attract attention because of its strategic location silk roads wise . There are so many other tragedies going on like Ethiopia for example . How much to intervene and for how long is so difficult . The other side of it is that there are real people out there whose lives are being torn apart so you can’t have ethical debates for too long. Glad better informed people than me make these decisions

Never seen the news today yet Davy but did the Chinese not step in the following week after the yanks left to restore peace and make promise huge investment and infrastructure to the country

Thought they also done a deal with the Telibant to keep the peace.

Anyone interested in this topic should give “Bitter Lake” a watch. Very interesting documentary. Basically any intervention in Afghanistan made stuff 10 times worse and the last infrastructure drive created the heroin trade.

The USA should have stayed and took responsibility for their actions and saw it through

They did a deal alright, sit back and watch our investments and we will turn a blind eye! The Chinese aren’t noted for the social rights.

Very true you've only to cast an eye what's happening in Hongkong as few months..

There a country worth a watching and in my opinion they should be stopped in their tracks two years ago.

Taliban are anti poppy cultivation.

When production is cut, opium and subsequently heroin prices rise.

When heroin prices rise in the west, crime also goes up to fund the more expensive product.

It’s a mine field, literally.

As for the the Chinese, don’t get me started on where their priorities are...

Afghanistan is a lost cause. It's very unlikely that any peacekeeping mission will succeed in maintaining any sort democracy there. The US-NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan is more than 95 per cent complete and is due to finish by 31 August 2021.

So basically the US and NATO have handed over to the Taliban on the proviso that they won't allow al-Qaeda, ISIS, or any other extremist group to operate in the areas they control.

I believe they are financially supported by the Pakistani government which is shameful. I feel so bad for the women, kids. We will just be sitting back watching the soccer stadium open again for executions. What is wrong with people that they impose their beliefs on others. No place for any religious beliefs in any government. And I include God Bless America!

If you go back far enough you can blame the Soviets for the ruination of Afghanistan.. Its been a shit show ever since.. The Taliban were actually created by the US who in their great wisdom decided to arm Afghans to the teeth in their struggle with soviet forces.. The Soviets withdrew and this newly created monster the Taliban decided to turn on the very people who "helped" them the US.. It was always on the cards that the Americans would withdraw.. A forever war is not viable and with a huge vaccum opening up the Taliban are ready and waiting to take their place.. It might not be that bad.. Let's hope they mature otherwise a civil war is on the cards

Since the Taliban have swept into Kabul, there has been a lot of very empty rhetoric from politicians.

The Americans did the best they could to sow the seeds of democracy during their twenty years occupation, but the minute they left the democratically elected Afghan government and their army just didn't have the heart to fight the Taliban.

I very much doubt the EU will send an army and air force to restore democracy, as it would be political suicide when the military transport planes began landing filled with the coffins carrying the bodies of Irish, French, German troops.

I fully agree. I have believed that there is a massive void in an agency that has the balls to do the right thing. One thing is for sure, the Taliban cannot be let in power. They are a small force but their key weapon is that the Afghans know that they will remove the head of your sister or brother without hesitation. They are evil, pure and simple and we cannot tolerate their force into power.

I just saw men falling to their death from a US airforce plane as it took off from the airport so I do believe the people are fearful for their lives

However Trump did a deal and once that was signed the writing was on the wall for the army and the government

Thats why they could take over the country so quickly,the army has been deserting for months since the deal was done

The spokesman says that The Taliban have changed so we'll have to wait and see if they have

Let's see if women and girls are treated differently to the last time when they were controlling the country

And what if they aren’t? Pakistan and Saudi support the taliban and now China is talking to them. China disgusts me, all they care about is money.

I'm not educated enough on the whole thing but coming at it in laymans terms it's crazy whats going on. People climbing up on the plane as it's about to depart with nothing but the clothes on their back. Even to get a seat on the plane and leave your family and loved ones behind. Imagine. Just imagine.

In really simple terms America wanted to start another war to help fund the military, the found their war.

They pumped billions of tax money into defense, military and arms dealers. Lining the pockets of alot of their friends along the way.

There was enough apathy for the 20 year war in America for them to pull out and not get blowback from the own population.

Internationally it could turn into one of the biggest atrocities in the modern world. Cant contemplate how those poor innocent people are feeling right now.

Approx 7000 American soldiers dead

Approx 450 British soldiers dead

Approx 1 million civilians dead in Iraq & Afghanistan.

The cost of war. Absolute bastards continuing to indulge in such campaigns in the name of 'peace'
