"I think fetishism is where sexual gratification is directly linked to a certain thing but to an abnormal extent. Preference is just that...it's desired but not required" I think that’s just about as good an explanation as you could get. The one persons vanilla is another persons kink or fetish, and where the lines between each will go will go on forever. I thinks it’s about perception and preference.

I have lots of different preferences or if you like kinks, but I don't necessarily need them all the time or eveytime to get off.But I prefer it I think a fetish is kinda more of a requirement (don't like to say an abnormal one because who can judge) like basically it's needed to be fully satisfied. That's always how I've seen it anyway

"Following on from another thread, where does a preference end and a fetish begin? Is there a clear cut line between the two?" Preference and fetish are two different things and in a sexual/sexuality context, their meaning is very clearly defined. A fetish is a sexual act or an object that is nearly always necessary for the person to become aroused and enjoy sex. If you have a fetish, unless certain objects or object, body parts or a specific sexual act are involved in the sex you’re having, chances are it won’t be satisfying for you. A kink is something that arouses us that’s not considered the sexual norm, it is basically something that you really enjoy but isn’t necessary or even wanted during every single sex session. A preference is just liking someone or something, better than other. A sexual preference for example is preferring kissing over touching during sexual intercourse.

"If someone would only date a man taller than them or above a certain height - is that a fetish or preference? " If body height gives you an extra sexual gratification than it's a fetish.

"I distinguish between preference, fetish and fetishisation. As someone said preferences is when is desirable but not necessary. Fetish is a particular sexual desire that gives you an extra kick/arousal and you strive to get it wherever possible. Finally fetishisation in a sexual context can easily become an obsession and result in objectification of a person based on one single characteristic. " I couldn’t think of the words to describe the difference between fetish and fetishisation and you’ve done it perfectly!

I agree they are totally different things but I don’t agree someone necessarily find it difficult to get aroused without the elements of their fetish being fulfilled. The fetish gives sexual gratification but, except in extreme examples, it’s not the only thing that does
