Hi all,I'm due to have one this week out of desperation ( haven't eaten solid food in 5 days ). Have a fear of dentists and needles. Any one here ever get one and what was your experience. To be blunt I'm shitting bricks.

Its awful, think of the worst pain you have ever had and double it. Then not being able to eat properly for weeks after is a disaster.

Got one done last year after being in your exact situation of fear and panic.

Was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be

I had one and it was fine. Asked for the gas if you’re a nervous patient.

Better that than tooth ache anyway xxx

Op you're right to go for root canal!! I had the option of one less than a month back and said nah Pull it.. dentist was angling me for the pull too (not that type you randy dogs)

Anyway I don't fesr the dentist but about 30 minutes in and the dentist nearly sweating in my face and sounding nervous, I was like, "hmmm this seems to not be going to plan" and it literally felt like he was going to pull may face and jaw off

Long story short the tooth broke off at the top, then he had to cut into my gum to get the root and only half came out

Then he said ah well half the root has to stay there but it should come out in time... thanks mate I said knowing that this wasn't meant to be the outcome

Was in a hoop for about 8 days after. Anti biotics, pain meds etc but it's grand now

The inside of my mouth was cut with the amount of jigging around so between that and the whole assault on my face it took a while to recover

Point being I wouldn't fear a root canal as pulling it could be a far worse experience

Gas up as another said and don't worry about the needle you hardly feel it. It's more like a pressure feeling than a pain per se

It’s a long procedure and the smell of tooth cutting is horrible . it’s not that painful though as you ll be anaesthetised and it will be a good solution for your current problems . Best of luck hope it works for you

Antrim Town

Had treatment for mine last year 2 sessions before covid, 3rd one during, tooth on lower jaw had 3 roots, and had abscess which needed antibiotics too, dentist was great, so was the nurse, very reassuring and not as painful as some treatments had been, worst thing was one of the drills, not the high pitched fast one but seemed a slower grinding one if that makes sense, just didnt enjoy the sensation, but not had any issues since.

Had a root canal treatment done a few years back to get the tooth prepared for a crown. Went very smooth, no pain after the first treatment or the second one. Was slightly sore, but thats it.

I'd say it's mostly down to how skilled the dentist is and in what state the tooth is in. If it's already gone very bad, it'll get worse before it gets better.

Had one last year and I've literally had fillings that were worse than the root canal. Find a talented dentist who is used to doing them as you'll notice the difference being done.

I'm petrified of needles. Used to be petrified of dentists too until I found a really good dentist who took all my fears away.

Had 2 root canals done. It's by far not near as bad as it seems.

Not painful at all either.

Worst thing about it is the initial injection. All other injections after- you can't feel them at all.

Genuinely nothing to be afraid of

Thanks for all the advice/ experiences ,makes it a bit easier.

I think the fact that the dentist I used to go to as a kid was know as the butcher and used a needle the size of a pencil stuck with me

You will be glad you took the root canal option once the work is finished believe me. It's not painful, just tedious sitting in the dentist chair for 45 minutes, and having a dental dam secured to one's adjacent teeth and gums is only mildly uncomfortable. If you experience any pain during the procedure, don't be afraid to ask them to give you another shot of dental anesthetic.

I have finally started to overcome my great of the dentist after a new dentist came to my practice a few years ago. He did a root canal on me.

Apart from his manner & his skill, two things that really helped were he waited a the proper amount of time between injecting the local anesthetic & starting (did a proper check that i was numb)

The other was having my ear buds in listening to music. It meant the sounds of the drill didn't make me anxious

.

I had one years ago, and it was fine.

I found getting a crown to be much worse when they had to make a mould of my mouth.

They numb you up for all procedures, having an injection in your jaw isn't nice but its all tolerable. You shouldn't feel any pain from the actual procedure because of the numbing injections.

Also let it be a lesson to you. A root canal would have only been a filling if you got it looked at sooner.

After I got my root canal I always see a dentist every 6 months.

I also suggest you bring headphones earbuds, its pretty boring and will help you stay chill. You just need to be able to hear enough to hear any instructions from the dentist.

I was the same.

My bitch dentist from my childhood days took out a tooth which never grew back while I kept asking her not to (there was nothing wrong with it, just a hole she didn't want to fill). That tooth is still missing.

I can only imagine how many people are completely traumatised by dentists like her who don't get their teeth checked now then leave it too late

It's actually not always the case that it would only have been a filling .I've had a couple done not because I didn't look after my teeth but due to injuries I got over the years can cause you to end up having to have root canal farther down the line.

OP it really isn't that bad once the injection is over it is fine and that isn't that bad. It is just a long time sitting there while they do it and is it usually more than one sitting too.

I've had 2 root canals.

Horrendous infections before the root canals were done so was more than happy to have them done to stop the pain...... Plus the tooth is now dead, so don't have to worry about it being sore ever again.

I've had two. Both in top back teeth so 4 nerve pulps to be removed. It takes about two hours. Get the dentist to give you a mouth prop. Its a little plastic wedge to help you keep your mouth open rather than sitting there holding it open your self. Those face muscles get very sore otherwise

You'll find that the tooth ache was wayyyyyyyyyy worse than the treatment. I had one done 15 years ago, I can still vividly remember the agony I was in with tooth ache especially at night. I have no recollection of any pain during the root canal treatment. You'll be a free man again after, believe me.

Anyhow good luck! And let us know how you got on.

I've had it done and literally didn't feel a thing except a thinner wallet afterwards. It took no longer than 40 minutes and my mouth was numb for several hours afterwards but after that it was like it never happened. Don't believe all the hype and don't stress it either you'll only work yourself into a frenzy for nothing. Just tell your dentist that you're not good with needles and that you've got a very low pain threshold and a bit of a girl and they will up the dosage of pain killers. You'll be grand, don't sweat it
