Was just talking to someone who sent me a video from a couple of years ago when we were at the hill across from viewpoint, when you’re about half way up it if you put the car into neutral and let the handbrake off without touching anything the car rolls up the hill instead of down….

Anyone ever do it themselves too?

Or does anyone know how or why it happens?

Pretty strange but cool at the same time!

There's also one in Offaly where there's a stream at the side of the road

The stream is flowing downhill and my car rolled uphill in neutral.

An optical illusion is something that appears to be happening but isn’t actually happening??

I definitely wouldn’t call this an optical illusion as it definitely is rolling up the hill

As far as I am aware, the optical illusion at Spelga Dam in the Mourned can't actually be accessed by a vehicle anymore; personally I think it's rural myth.

It's not a myth. The optical illusion is created because the road is actually sloping downhill slightly but the environment creates the impression that it is uphill.

Stick a spirit level in your boot. Next time you're there get it our and lay it on the ground. You will see that the car is rolling downhill. It's to do with how the landscape fools you into thinking downhill is uphill

They are all over the country including the one near carlingford but it's the same story. The car rolls downhill not up but it just looks that way.

It definitely isn't. So yes that's exactly what an optical illusion is.

Newry Down

There's an interesting place on the Newry to Portadown towpath where the water flows in two directions at once; at the summit beside Acton Lake.

Water flows north to Lough Neagh AND south to the Irish Sea at Carlingford Lough.

Very unique place between Scarva and Poyntzpass, marked by a large sign and a convenient seat.

I have never heard of a similar phenomenon -water flowing in two directions at the same place.

Quite an engineering feat, or more precisely a hydrological anomaly.

Indeed. It is very much an optical illusion. The car is not rolling uphill. As RB says, the surroundings just make it look like it is. The car is actually rolling downhill, ergo optical illusion

It's just a wee access road right beside the dam. Not sure what direction you'd be coming from but it's beyond the car park as you head downhill towards the big S bend. It's only a few metres but you can drive down as far as the gate

There's a village in Mayo where they make dildoes called King Cong.

Their best seller is a silent version known as The Quiet Man.
