How dangerous is Dublin?

Jump to newest

Newry Down

When the lockdowns and Covid restrictions end, I had been planning to make several daytrips to Dublin.

However, in the mainstream media, one would get the impression that is becoming increasingly dangerous,: the Liffey boardwalk has a notorious reputation, the canal towpaths are renowned for mugging and bag-snatching, and the latest Blanchardstown incident does not reassure me.

Is Dublin becoming more dangerous than other urban areas?

Eh, quiet peaceful areas with people going lawfully about their daily lives don't make good headlines. All cities have dodgy areas, all societies have criminal elements. Use your head as you would in any large city.

It's no more dangerous than any other city aslong as you know which areas to avoid

The problem is as thatyou need to know what area's to avoid

Yes some area's of the inner city have a lot of scumbags and junkies

Stay off the boardwalk for a start it's like a Zombie movie sometimes.

If you're planning to visit certain places ask on here for information on how to visit them safely or safer places to stay if you're getting accommodation

I don't know Dublin very well but I'd say it is only playing catch-up on other cities.

Armed with the knowledge that certain areas are unsavoury just don't go there.

A lot of negative comments here, dublin is very safe and friendly. If you see a person strung out cross the road, you will get trouble if your looking for trouble it’s the same everywhere.

I’ve been to all over the country and there are a lot of worse places to be fair

Dublin

The boardwalk and O'Connell Street is always busy with users, addicts, booze hounds etc but these people/groups are usually in their own mad worlds and don't really interact with us normies

Its media fear mongering. Obviously there is the odd is incident but I'm around this area as well as in some of the most deprived and 'dodgy' areas around the city and suburbs a few days a week and have never had anything said to me

Over the years the fear in Dublin is from 'normal' heads on a night out when people are coming out of pubs d*unk, on and looking for fights

The addicts, homeless etc generally keep to themselves

The scene looks awful but ironically most of the addicts etc are pretty decent and approachable

To be clear I've never had any hassle in these 'areas to avoid'. Any grief has been in typically placid, well thought after areas

South Side.

I grew up in Dublin City centre. It was always a bit rough, due to poverty, etc. There are a few places where you can end up in trouble, so get local knowledge, turn on your "trouble" radar, and you'll be better able to enjoy the city.

I've spent at least 2 days/nights every month in Dublin for the last 40yrs whilst over on business & staying in city centre hotel and found it safe enough.

I've never encountered any trouble even late a night walking back to my hotel after a night out.

I think Dublin is just like any city, including my own, in that you just have to be aware of your surroundings and not put yourself in any dangerous situations....Just have fun

I'd agree with this and also add that people are responsible for their own safety or lack of it. One person can enter any village/town or city in any country on the planet and find trouble if they look for it. Others can go through the same places and have a great time. (Not saying OP will be looking for trouble, just a general opinion)

It's silly to cloud your judgement of somewhere based on few media reports. If that was the case you would never leave your house. Any large urban area will have good and bad parts. Dublin is no different but the vast majority of Dublin is safe and well worth visiting. I know Paris quite well and it can be very dangerous in parts but yet it is voted the most beautiful and most visited city in the world. Come to Dublin but do your research on where to avoid, have a bit of common sense like you would in any city, and i guarantee you will have an amazing time

This thread reminds me of a trip to Florida 20 years ago.

Met a family on the flight out and spoke to them again 2 weeks later on the return trip.

During those 2 weeks they had been involved in a carjacking in Tampa and got caught up in a police shootout with a local gang in a shopping centre in a rundown Miami neighbourhood.

I asked why they were even in those areas especially with small kids and the reply was that they like to live a little.

Look, if you're just visiting then most likely you're going to spend the majority of your time south of the liffey, which is generally grand. A few heroin addicts in Stephens Green Park but they will just ask you for money, say no and they'll move on to the next person.

North of the liffey, I can't see you going much further than O'Connell Street and Henry Street for shopping. Plenty of groups of drug users and skangers but they tend to stick to themselves. Do the same and you'll be grand.

Stay off the boardwalk, it's not even that nice.

The only thing worth going to in Blanch is the shopping centre and I don't forsee many issues with that. The rough parts of blanch are some of the housing estates so just stay away from them.

Other than that, keep to the same precautions you would in any other city.

Lived here all my life - always within 2miles of the centre. I frequently walk home late at night on my own through some “dodgy” areas and I’ve NEVER had an issue. I refuse to accept there are bad areas, only clearly vulnerable muppets from out of town who swing cameras and bags and titter along in heels. It’s mind-bogglingly ridiculous.

It’s a capital city, take the same basic precautions as you would anywhere and you’ll survive.

And the only place I’ve ever been mugged, having travelled the world on my own, was Blackrock - one of the poshest most up its own arse suburbs in Ireland. So go figure.

All cities can have a rough element to them but then again so can anywhere. People just need to be careful about their own safety when out and about these days. It's the world we live in unfortunately.

Hmm... so there’s nothing to see northside? Nothing like the Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin Graveyard, the Royal Canal, the Basin, Phoenix Park, Clontarf, Malahide, Howth and the piers and plethora of beautiful fish restaurants, or stay close to the city and discover the Gravedigger and all the awesome new bars and restaurants in Smithfield and Phibsboro.

Nah, head to Blanch which is a complete personality-less shopping shithole. Or Temple Bar where you will get robbed - by crap restaurants and soulless bars.

Yeah stay southside.

I actually love the boardwalk. All the howeryas getting stoned. One once ran after me with my daughters’ shoe that had fallen out the buggy. He was so chuffed “Miss miss!! The Babie dropped a shoe” that he tripped and face planted a bin and hurled the shoe in the river. I’ve never laughed so hard in my life. Tears ran down my legs.

I also once flashed my tits out the window of a room in the Morisson to raucous cheering and singing and encouragement from the skangers below. I’ve a photo of that somewhere too!!

I work by the boardwalk so I'd often spend my lunchtime sitting there taking everyone in.

I really liked watch all the d*unks, addicts sitting there with the tourists and workers. I never saw any hassle either, both groups always kept to themselves and enjoyed the space. It's a great spot on a warm day.

Sounds like a photo you need to upload.

Probably best in some cases! .. Brilliant! We can be Drum buddies! Oh yeah Hollister cos we are cool right? .. We can have a rummage around in the dark and afterwards i can treat you to a burger in Five Guys... Dont say I don't spoil you Diablo!

Ur really spoiling me now with the 5 guys! .. I knew it... I was going to say Milanos but then i said that Diabolo will get a great kick out this and i was dead right.. The northsiders will now think Five Guys is some Magic Mike strip show instead of a burger joint! Only you could do that! "

Hell

"Look, if you're just visiting then most likely you're going to spend the majority of your time south of the liffey, which is generally grand.

Hmm... so there’s nothing to see northside? Nothing like the Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin Graveyard, the Royal Canal, the Basin, Phoenix Park, Clontarf, Malahide, Howth and the piers and plethora of beautiful fish restaurants, or stay close to the city and discover the Gravedigger and all the awesome new bars and restaurants in Smithfield and Phibsboro.

Nah, head to Blanch which is a complete personality-less shopping shithole. Or Temple Bar where you will get robbed - by crap restaurants and soulless bars.

Yeah stay southside. "

Eh... I said North of the Liffey as in literally just talking about the city centre. I wasn't talking about the whole county so I didn't mention those places. This thread is about Dublin being rough not about tourist hotspots.

And literally a few of those places you mentioned are not even North Dublin so I don't know what your point is.

They are going on a day trip... How much do you want them to do in a day? Most likely they will be shopping and walking in the city... Which means they will be southside for the most part. Nothing I said was wrong.

And if you could read what I wrote without needing to make an argument from it you'd see that I said the only thing worthwhile in blanch was a shopping centre... Please tell me where I've actually advised them to go there?

I only mentioned blanch because it was mentioned by the OP.

And I'm from that personality-less shopping shithole so I'm well aware that it's a kip.

IRLANDA. / Prague. / Cil Dara

The issue with Dublin is, with it being so small the Tourists /sightseers have no choice but to stumble into areas where scumbags lurk, the upper keys is now the new hot spot and will continue to become so, but easier for the scumbags to do their thing also.
