I am genuinely puzzled by the revelation that the Russian blackhat hackers, who initially installed their ransomware on Ireland's HSE (Health Service Executive) computer system, have now provided the key to unlock the system.

I doubt if the 'Wizard spider' group have had a crisis of conscience; has the Irish government actually paid the ransom?

They could be just playing with us. Not sure the government could pay without declaring it, but who knows, it could be wrapped up in some covert defense budget.

They still have tons of data and will or have already sold some it to other parties interested in exploiting it.

This same Russian group attacked the database of a psychiatric hospital in Finland, and patient records began appearing online after individual patients who had been contacted refused to pay.

There is speculation that patients in Ireland may now be contacted, particularly those with illnesses or conditions that they might prefer not to be in the public domain, such as STIs, alcohol-induced cirrhosis or cannabis-induced psychosis and schizophrenia, to name a few.

When I was in hospital recently, staff were unable to locate details of previous surgery including an adverse drug reaction in the same hospital. The idea that hackers will have access to my entire medical history is laughable

They most likely realised that even with a key it will take our inept bunch forever to tidy this thing up. So it must have been feeling sorry for the people of Ireland.

It has been reported that sensitive data that was stolen by the Russian ransomware hackers is to be punished online tomorrow!
