So it looks like on Monday the hackers are going to release private medical records on to the internet unless they're paid the ransom

Some solicitors already offering their services to sue The HSE on anyone's behalf that wants to put in a claim

Without getting too personal about your private info on here would you care enough to sue The HSE if someone could read your medical history on a website

Personally couldn't give a toss

Wouldn't bother me but the opportunists or scammers that will use the info to get money etc out of people is worrying. Even with all the warnings of fraud etc in this country people are been caught out daily.

I’ve nothing to hide medically, so not too bothered. It’s still worrying that personal data is being released....I’m sure it’s terrifying for some.

I had my bank details leaked before and it felt very much a like a violation. All funds were returned but it still leaves you feeling weird.

Medical confidentiality is a joke anyway, while in hospital a couple of weeks ago on several occasions staff stood near my bed audibly discussing other patients.

I don't personally give a shit who sees my medical records, however I'm sure it will cause distress to some. No surprise the legal profession is looking to cash in either

There's always been an option to pay for the operation yourself or to use the scheme where The HSE pays for you to have it outside the state

I believe the Healy Raes organise buses to drive up the North for their constituents to have operations

It's not really going to affect us but more the higher ups the government basically has 3 choices in hopes to fix this

1. hire a hacker or two to counter the original hackers

2. pay the ransome but doing so won't stop them from doing it again

3. Payout to upgrade our systems as some are still using windows 7 where there is now no protection on them

Up or down the government has been caught with their pants down so will have to payout something to somewhere

There are still plenty medical conditions and procedures that carry a stigma for some...

HIV, abortion, mental health records etc...

Probably a tiny minority but it's the HSE they are holding tonrensom rather than the individuals

.. I guess its a question of data protection responsibility. Cases have been brought against private companies who don't protect data adequately. The same laws apply to the public sector. Laws need to be applied equally to everyone.

Surely some expert hackers attacking in some new-fangled ways won't lead to too much sueing? (Of course it could). It's just it's like something we have not truly expireanced before. I get blaming them if they don't handle it well. But trying to prevent it might of been very hard or impossible.

Botton line is if you hold personal data then you are responsible for protecting it from threats exactly like this.

Ireland has imposed €715,000 in fines under the GDPR since it came into effect in May 2018.

You can't very well fine the private sector and allow the public sector to get away with this kind of thing.

To have a State organisation hacked in such a manner should have someone resigning

Yes, I would consider suing...think if you showed up for a job interview and maybe your medical details were known to the interviewers !!

As for my info, thankfully I’m in a position to not have any skeletons in the closet, unless people are interested in the weird things that happen to me. I’m sure it’s worrying for people who have kept things from their family and friends for whatever reason.

So the people in charge survive with no consequences ??

HSE and Dept of Health have a long history of making families fight them in court for what families are entitled to.

Disabled Children, Bridget McCaul, Mother and Baby Homes, the list is endless yet no one is responsible

I agree that private citizens shouldn't be suing the HSE for this unless they have a significant material loss as a result of the breach, and even then its questionable. There should be a minimal fine given however to show that we take data protection breaches seriously and to encourage better security going forward.

I’m not saying there shouldn’t be any consequences. If there are clear holes there then the executives in charge of the IT system should be removed and replaced with competent people.

I just don’t believe that shelling out a ton of money for lawsuits is the answer to the problem. Obviously if someone suffers a huge loss due to their information being shared, they should be compensated but your average Joe has zero reason to be contemplating any sort of lawsuit.

Also, this is slightly different to families fighting for their rights.

What would suing the HSE achieve, you get a payout but your records are still on the Web. Does that mean money makes it all OK and your not upset anymore.

Why do we have to sue for everything in this country.

I work for the hse and they do their best to protect everyone's information.

I think if the HSE said they are going to spend €1bn on IT infrastructure there would be uproar that it wasn't being spent on more important things.

Just can't keep people happy. This was a sophisticated attack that has gotten past much better protection.

But we'll done HSE and GOV for not paying, decryption code arrived, hopefully it will work so we can get back to looking after patients .

Don't know much about hacking but this doesn't sound like the super sophisticated hacker attack by highly skilled computer computer nerds they (hse & government) first made it sound for us to believe. More like falling for a random phishing attempt and the hackers got lucky.

Happens daily. It's why large organisations give their staff regular cyber security training refreshers. Most people are shocked how easy it is for this to happen

There needs to be a dedicated organisation comprising representatives from: Irish computer security businesses; Garda Siochana, Oglaigh na hEireann (Irish Army), infrastructure organisations selectivity, water roads, etc., ethical convicted Irish hackers; et al.

This would be headed by an international expert with the power to act (quickly), but able to draw on expertise from the component organisations.

This problem is definitely going to get worse. Within three months this 'action man or woman' needs to be in place.

Ireland needs to wake up to the reality of infrastructure sabotage and ransomware, and learn hard lessons from the HSE attack.

Born 1978....

March 1982....got mala stuck up his nose...

July 1983....cannot hear very well...has ear wax that you could set spuds in

August 1983....mala again...

Sept 1985...appears to have cut himself shaving...

1987 to 1997..colds flu and other minor ailments

1999...appears to have a rash on his left buttock that looks a bit like Guatemala if you squint...

2000.. came in hungover and claimed he had the flu

2001...should probably refrain from any activities of that nature until the swelling goes down...

2003.. Mala again..

2005...treated for premature ejaculation

2007....came in with a broken nose.....probably broke it trying to get the mala out..

2009...rang and said he'd like to see the doctor immediately...claimed it burned....

2011....got an erection in front of doctor who was examining him

2013....rang looking to know how to stop the squirts...

2015....the rash is back...

2017...has a bad back...when asked about exercises or physio claimed he has been going for massages...strictly for therapeutic purposes

2018...looked for a cert for a week off work...because cheltenham was on

2019...all quite....

2020....rang...looking to know about viagra....said he only wanted it to stop him falling out of bed
