I took a notion last week and bought meself a bike. Said to myself this will be great, it must be a good 15 years since I spent a few miles up on the saddle I reckoned it cant be that hard to get back into it.....jesus christ was I wrong between nearly needing jump leads to restart myself and hardly being able to walk after 4 miles I threw in the towel and turned on my back home I wont say never again but I'll definitely need to give my hole a week to recover first. So I'm just wondering what other things did people try again or for the first time since covid that was nearly the detriment or betterment of themselves?

I did the buying a bike thing too after years off it. Same thing, I was wrecked after a few km for the first couple of trips.

I'm a very casual cyclist. But anyway the more regularly you get out though you'll build up your distance bit by bit. I find if I go a couple of weeks without getting out, I'm almost back to square one. But i love getting out, there are some great routes to do locally.

I'm on the other side of that I do about 350 to 400 km per week, the best advice I can give you is start off with slow and short spins, if you start with 3 10kms per week you will get there, make sure you have good shorts with a good shammy and use some shammy cream and the rear end will get use to the saddle over time, make sure the bike is a good fit, that way it will be more comfortable and you can enjoy it more. Just stick with it and it will get easier over time.

Don't take on too much too soon.

Same as with any exercise.

Go at a pace you're comfortable with.

You'll see progress if you persist.

Most of all be safe out there, a lot of drivers either aren't accustomed to expecting cyclists or get impatient rather easily.

jesus christ guys, its only a bike?! I am in no gym body shape myself, quite the opposite, but if you're dying on the bike how the hell do you manage anything else... more... demanding?

as for myself, started painting plastic models... not bad at all

If you have a sore ass after only four miles OP, it could be a number of factors causing your discomfort.

1- Saddle is too high, causing excessive pressure on your neither regions, you could try lowering it a little.

2- Your saddle could be too narrow to support you properly. Humans come in all shapes and sizes, so the width of one's sit bones (ischial tuberosities) can vary drastically. Many good bike shops have a special gel pad or Ass-O-Meter you can sit on to determine the correct width saddle to suit your personal anatomy. Specialized, Trek, and Ergon produce the same saddle in multiple widths.

Hope this helps, happy cycling.

Thanks for the pointers and I intend to stick at it more regularly, but I just found it hilarious how broke up my arse was after the start of it

Your rear end gets use to it, I see a lot of people from my local cycling club every year giving out its the saddles fault that there rear is killing them after the winter off the bike, but after a few spins they are fine, have a look at your local cycling club most of the local clubs do a couch 2 100k group every year. Our club gets a few of them to join the club, but only 2 to 5 will stay and get into the weekly training groups. I know its hard at the start but do as much as you can at your pace and it will get easier over time.

I started baking loads after the first lockdown, problem was i was eating everything, slowed that down and started exercising again now, but i remember buying the bike in the shop, i said to the guy "ive €1000 for the bike, give me the most expensive softest saddle you have", he laughed at me and showed me these padded pants you wear, still hurts a little especially because the country roads are so bad at the edge but its better than nothing, get the pants!

The only 100k I'll be doing will be in a car

The pants on the other hand maybe a good idea. I will look like one of the Kardashians butt's are cycling along
