Quitting Smoking!!!

I'm sure that there are plenty of former smokers on here and I am looking for advice, I have my quit date picked out, patches ready to go and the nicotine spray as a backup, but do you have any tips on how to make this any easier. I have tried many times in the last almost 30 years to get off cigarettes and failed every time, but I really want this time to be different. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I use to smoke 40 fags a day and gave them up 8 years ago. I went to a guy in kinsale Co cork. He did a form of acupuncture on me. I had these 2 pins in my ear for a month. Never smoked since. He said that if I did smoke with them in it would lead to me vomiting badly.found it really good as when I did it I use to go to the smoking rooms with the lads and had no craving for 1

I stopped at age 40 and chewed the nicotine gum. Patches never worked for me.

3 months off them here after more than 30 years a smoker

Just went cold turkey

Every time you have an urge to smoke distract yourself mentally somehow, it's amazing how fast it can pass

Encourage yourself to keep up by counting how much you are saving and reward yourself for it

Good luck!!!

I tried acupuncture before but not successful, I didn't have any needles near my ears though

Gum only worked for me for a while the last time I tried ,maybe it was a lack of willpower on my part

Have you tried vaping? .. No more tar or carbon monoxide just a clean hit of nicotine..not 100% safe either but better than smoking..

You should read Alan Carr's EasyWay to Stop Smoking. It's been a best seller for decades.

It is very good at changing your perception on what it means to be a smoker.

Go to Quit.ie and the HSE will send you out a free quitting pack. Pencils and a money box for your savings etc.

Also, download a Quit Smoking app, to help motivate you on a daily basis. Show you how many fags you havent smoked, how your health is recovering on an hourly/daily/weekly basis.

I quit about 18 months ago in preparation for major surgery as nicotine in my system would really impact my recovery.

This meant nicotine replacement wasn't a good option for me, so my doctor prescribed Champix to assist with going cold turkey. I was pretty psychotic for a few weeks (although other meds could have been responsible for that) but it worked

I did try Champix, I had some of the weirdest dreams ever but didn't find it diminished my desire to smoke

No, I'm the only smoker in the house, but I've never actually smoked in the house

somewhere

Off them since 2002 smoking 30 major a day at the time

It was my third attempt at the time after smoking for 20 years

The gum helped, having something in my hand to do with my mouth like biting a bic pen helped

The biggest help was saving the money in a big jar and using it for big budget treats for myself

I got a great big expensive Sony TV and VCR player that got great use

Off them 9 years myself. The Nicorette quick mist spray is really good, still use it, but better than smoking. Also get the quit app for your phone. Good motivation on time, money, health. numbers not smoked. Just checked mine and bearing in mind they were €8.20 a packet when I gave up and the app says I’ve saved €27,903 and haven’t smoked 67,236 cigarettes!! Bingo, there is your motivation, but haven’t got a clue where the 27k is but I drive a brand new jeep every year which i didn’t do before.

Also another tip I got and worked was to drink cranberry juice, not sure why it worked but it did, used to sip it.

Good luck OP, choosing a date is good. Stick to it and scrunch up any cigs you have left. Another sign of commitment.

I did the opposite and left half a packet in the drawer

As an in case of emergency measure

Still haven't touched them or smelled them (I love the smell of tobacco)

But I think I was just really testing my willpower

I’m a former smoker.. my experience would say don’t just use the patches or whatever works for you.. change what you do to that you normally associate with smoking.. for me I had mandarin oranges everywhere.. apparently vitamin C is good and also it’s a nice sweet reward.. and remove yourself from any situation that normally ends up with you smoking.. good luck

my dad used champix abd been off them since . Champix was initially meant for depression while in the trail phase the people that was using and smoked said no side effects but I can’t and don’t want to smoke.

This worked for me. When you get that mad craving pour yourself a pint of water and slowly sip it. Or get one of those really hard to peel big oranges and spend ten minutes getting it ready. The distraction really helps. Mind you I’m back on them after 10 years so what do I know!! Good luck xx Jessy
