Bothar charity fraud.

Over many years, I was impressed by the aims of the prominent Irish charity, Bothar, which used charitable funds to supply African farmers with goats with which they could earn a living and feed themselves.

The former CEO has now admitted that he embezzled over 750,000 Euro to fund a lavish lifestyle, that was out of sync with his annual salary.

The previous CEO was also recently found dead at his home.

Why would someone join and then defraud an organisation which had such altruistic objectives; I am not naive, but I find this behaviour bewildering.

Just look at Angela Kerins and Rehab. It's nothing new I'd imagine... I'll contribute to a go fund me page or a cause directly rather than go through most charities. Like everything else in Ireland, they're corrupt.

I volunteer/ work for 2 charities and neither have vastly overpaid chief executive officers

That's what happened with Pieta House and it will keep happening while regulations are so lax

The business of charity as it’s known. They’re all mostly unregulated and not very transparent. How people can even justify 6 figure salaries is beyond me

I worked in Rehab Care in Carlow for a few years, every fundraiser or event held inhouse 3/4 of the money raised had to go to headquarters and they got pittance for all the hard work,I gave up helping out just because of this....

Few Charities are audited with any kind of professionalism. In a lot of cases the % of donations that go on salaries and admin leaves very little to go to the actual cause. This whole area of charities needs to have proper oversight and the scum that rip them off should do time. Disgusting !!

Totally agree with you here. Its simply greed. There's one looser in all of this the people these charities are set up to help. There's so much good been done by so many hopefully this won't tarnish all charities. Just research before you donate.

We never support large charities, always local organisations, whether charities or community groups. There's more transparency with their accounts and they are run mostly by volunteers who care.

I'd always be wary of a charity run by employees tbh.

I've volunteered for a few local charities over the years and was a trustee for a national one for now than 3 years.

None of those including the national one had paid members not even at board level.

Funding did not go directly to the end user but was used for training and equipment to enable the charity provide a particular service.

The biggest issue was the misuse of that funding in buying unnecessary and unused equipment and pointless training courses across the UK and Ireland.

Then of course there were always the internal power struggles and one-upmanship as well as those who refused to encourage new members or new ideas.

If all that can happen in an entirely voluntary organisation I'm never surprised when it happens within groups and charities where certain positions come with a salary.

People really think all this charities are spending the funds on what and whom its supossed to be spent on,its nothing new, even Trump donated money to his own charity just to pay himself back,people beeds to stop sending charity to africa, enough please, all donated funds never get to africa anyways.

Thre are many great charities doing fabulous work but there are also many with too many highly paid executives taking money therefore out of the bottom line.

I run an Events / Exhibitions Company & have been approached on many occasions by Companies. Organised Groups & individuals to help in Charity Fundraising Functions / Events they are holding including Concerts. Dinner Dances & Sports Events in UK & Ireland.

With many years experience of being involved I now advise those asking us to help run events what their charity is and why they are running it...ie in honour of someone or as thanks for services they received. I then tell them to ask the specific unit of charity they're fundraising for what they actually need ie Medical Equipment or Products etc and purchase them directly and then donate them. This cuts out monies going to Charity HQ & being diluted in support of individual units...In doing this I have seen everything from Blood Pressure Monitors to Heart Monitors to even Cancer Scanners purchased over the years with a plaque saying "donated by"

I know that sounds harsh but at least you know every penny you raise is supporting the cause you wish
