I was on a social media site recently and there were two photographs along side eash other.. One of a very dashing Cary Grant in a suit, over coat etc and one of a modern day hipster type. The contrast couldn't be more marked. Fashion changes.. I get that but has style.. Well... Gone out of style?

I've seen that photograph and while styles come and go and adapt or overlap there seems to be a very ad-hoc approach these days.

It's much more individual but I'll admit to wondering sometimes what was going through someone's head when they got dressed as there's no rhyme or reason to it.

In saying that I'm no Cary Grant either.

I saw the picture... one is of a Hollywood mega star at the time the other is some random dude on the street...

Maybe compare Clooney to Grant in a suit v suit for more accurate comparisons...

People probably feel more freedom to express themselves through their fashion these days and also have the means to do so. It's a good thing.

well, for one, one is a legend, in the time of no bullshit cinematography where you only succeeded if you had what you needed and knew what the hell you were doing... the other is a pretentious wannabe... which in itself is not bad, but ya know... that is where the difference comes from

I think whatever your style is, own it, rock it, embrace it and be comfortable with it. The world would be an incredibly dull and boring place if we all looked like uniform photocopies of each other

I think opinions will always differ as to what constitutes "style", so long as people are happy with what they're wearing, have at it

Well Im pretty sure the actual "style" in the majority of Ireland in the 40s, was dressed barefoot in flitters of clothing, maybe bathing once a week in a bucket outside.

I would much rather fashion today.

You are correct, but it was actually fashionable for men to go barefoot back then. Had a similar convo with my dad a few weeks ago. He also said that the peaked cap went through various fashion trends of position on the head; normal, to the side, then to the other side and at one stage, turned backwards. Also the ladies HAD to cover their hair with a hat going to mass. Then there's the story of the twins; one would wear the suit to 9am mass and then the other would wear the same suit to 11am mass. Great stories to hear about olden times

These days guys can be just as stylish in jeans and shirt as they are in a suit...its about the individual and how they wear it... Cool as
