Majority of RTÉ employees voted against a modest pay cut despite the broadcaster haemorrhaging money at an alarming rate.. Their so called stars have salaries ranging from 100k to 500k a year.. Imo RTÉ should be privitised and run like a business then it will turn a profit.. It can still be the governments mouthpiece only less waste.. Its good to know our 160 euro a year licence fee is being spent wisely.. Lots of repeats and shows bought for next to nothing from other broadcasters.. Very little homegrown TV either.. Time to dismantle RTÉ just like the FAI was..

Make it pay per view.. Say €5 a month and see how long it lasts. Its not a public service, its an inflicted dinosaur that we have to pay for. Shut it down..

The business model for state broadcasters is outdated and needs to be reformulated.

State broadcasters in autocratic regimes are essential purveyors of propaganda, but in a liberal democracy, where competition exists in many forms the licence fee model is in need of reform.

Critically, the salaries or more accurately the contractual fees of RTE's star performers is unjustifiable.

When Gay Byrne was in his prime, his contract fee for a daily radio programme and a Friday night talk show which he both produced and presented was not exorbitant.

And he lost most of it when he was scammed by Russell Murphy, because he focused too much on his programmes and not enough on his finances.

Hard not to complain when you have Edna Kenny and her trains on.. Fair Shitty and that tubular wonder Tubridy on of a Friday night interviewing who ever they found wandering around the RTE canteen that day.

It's not much different from all the other broadcasters such as the BBC which lives on the legacy of the likes of Only Fools and Horses and believes they are still offering quality programming. The commercial channels decided years ago to prioritise quantity over quality.

I've never seen a single episode of Strictly, I'm a celebrity..., X factor or any of the soaps so I'm definitely not their target audience. I don't watch news programmes so I stopped using those channels years ago.

Gay Byrne was still presenting the Late Late Show the last time I watched it and apart from the odd rugby match I couldn't tell you the last time I watched anything on terrestrial TV.

If they disappeared tomorrow I probably wouldn't notice but I do begrudge having to pay a TV licence for something I rarely if ever use.

I watch some sport on RTE and reeling in The years so its not good value for me

I'd prefer if I could pay a fee to The BBC every year to get to use the iplayer

David Attenborough

Line Of Duty

Match of the day

Mastermind

University Challenge

Lots of good quality drama and music on The BBC across all the channels

Well worth the licence fee in my opinion compared to RTE

RTE as a business mosel is way behind the times. It needs to be dismantled completely and start again.Get rid of all the big earners. Theres far too many chiefs and not eniugh indians in current set up.

Their sport is top class and better than tv3 , Tommy Tiernan too has an amazing great show . Their home produced stuff is dire . Jesus wept that builder and woman who revamp houses omg and the rest too yer one from Wexford who brings people to the side of a forest to look at a falling down shack , they never buy them so what's the point. Looking at the younger generation I'd say tv in it's present form is dead. Only thing my kids watch on TV is top gear and live sport

Yeah, I'm not sure why anyone would think that a for profit model would be better?

While I certainly agree that the likes of Duffy, Tubridy and D'Arcy, along with a few others, are overpaid I see no situation in which privatisation would be a better way. It's meant to be a public service broadcaster, not a profit making broadcaster.

I also couldn't cope without the doc on one app. What a marvelous resource!

I’m also a fan of RTE. A non private broadcaster is very, very important. Radio, TV and cultural contributions are all part of the TV license.

It is a sweeping statement to suggest all the fee goes directly to RTE TV and the payment of fat cats. I’m not an insider, but like all businesses, I would wager that the average salary in RTE is just that, average.

The few top earners, well like all thing’s hopefully their wages are justified by market value and what they bring to the station for advertising/listening metrics.

Could all businesses that have been state legacy institutions be reviewed, possibly, but I’d start with a lot of other public services that we pay for, and continue to pay a “TV” tax.

Guess no one here liked Love/Hate .... it’s tough to land a top rated series every time.

Just one persons opinion of course

I haven't watched RTE for years, actyally since they introduced that soarview digital plarform disaster. But I agree with that McCarthy fella, privatisation isn't a solution and I think it's good to have a national broadcaster. But RTE badly needs a complete overhaul and a change of attitude. By the latter I mean the unwillingness to make profit on some productions - to sustain partly the running of RTE - has to go. Same applies to the cantine recruitment and the civil servant attitude. Get rid of the overpaid pseudo celebrities or cut their salary down to 100'000 max. Most of those rte stars are contractors so it should be easy enough to cut them down. Also stop creating more of these journalist 'stars' by idealising them and calling programmes after them, I mean really is there no creativity in that place that they only can come up with: the Ray Darcy show, the Joe Duffy Show, the Ryan Tuburdy show, today with Claire Byrne ffs.
