Cheaper to let them keep it

The whole parking thing in this country, especially at hospitals really boils my piss.

In France, parking at hospitals is free, and normal parking in towns is free between 12 and 2pm to encourage people to go in to town and eat at the restaurants, its not rocket science

Welcome to Ireland!

Cheaper would be take a taxi or bus

I know, came from the continent long time ago but still a few things annoy me like parking fees at the hospitals...

Unfortunately people have no respect for free things, I can guarantee if the hospital car parks were free it would be full of cars belonging to people who work nearby.

Surely easy to implement a system where if your visiting the hospital they validate your parking ticket making it free?? If not you pay!

Exactly, and the hospital in cork is across the road from a shopping centre where most will park for Hospital appointments. I always go in and shop there as a thanks for my parking.

Yes but most car parks are run by separate companies who have to pay staff, insurance etc. I do think if people are using the facilities in a hospital, or have appointments etc should b free but than if went that way would there be any revenue for the company running it.

I had a lit off appointments last year in CUH. Couldnt use the shopping as centre as was unable to walk that far at the time. Anyway after all my visits, I had paid just over €100. Stuck it in my medical expenses and got 20% back. Still think its wrong to have to pay to park in hospital grounds if you are a patient.

Absolutely agree. It's bonkers considering all the other charges!

It's obscene when people who have loved ones who have passed away only to come out and have to pay to leave.. Maybe a dedicated car park for those with patients who are terminally ill?

A parking permit for families as that car park like disabled zones would be full of misguided selfish idiots!

Dublin City

I was panic-called to the Rotunda NICU many, many moons ago at 1am. A taxi didn’t cross my mind. Left the car in a parking space and ran in. Was there for 22hrs and came out to a twice clamped car with 3 tickets. Said fuckit, got a taxi home. Came back 6hrs later and it had been towed.

The fines were worth more than the car (car was to about be traded in worth €250, fines were about €400). Handed the keys to the clamping company with a solicitors letter and never heard from them again. Wankers.

@Madame, plenty of them park on the disabled places because are too lazy to walk to the doors.

In my homeland it was a big campaign 15 years ago: "If you want to take my parking space why you wouldn't take my disability?" The nationwide campain helped.

I havent seen since that time an eejit who took someones parking space.

It happens too often in Ireland

I don't know its people's ignorance, selfishness or just idiocy?

I just feel sometimes to hit a stupid head wouldnt be enough to teach them manners

.

These people probably have no experience of physical disability in their own lives or family members. They are completely selfish

As a hospital worker there's two reasons for charging, 1 to fund services that are underfunded and 2 when free previously the amount of people who parked there, got the bus to town for work/shopping meant no parking for patients or staff. So unfortunately it's necessary.

I for one would take a tax hike to fund our health service properly.

If it was done properly and transparently I think most people would be up for it.

Dispanding the regional health boards and establishing the HSE has proved to be the worst decision in our 100 year history

In fairness slainte care will hopefully improve things by taking a lot of unnecessary procedures out of hospitals and into the community. Covid has unfortunately held up the roll out of that.

But the biggest problem in the Irish health system is the private public system and until that is abolished then there will never be a good and fair system. Canada have no private healthcare its all public but well funded.

It's easy to say it's too many managers not enough front line (yes it's true) but it's also very complex also

Why is the private system wrong in your opinion

I pay my taxes like anyone else which helps fund the public health system

I also pay a lot of after tax money to pay for private care

My family are not a burden on the public system so I think its a good idea

You missed the point, private medicine in public hospitals doesn't work. It leads to patients with insurance being able to get seen faster and have their procedures carried out faster because the consultant and hospital get paid more.

There is a place for private healthcare, in private hospitals and yes I have health insurance
