So when youre growing up you learn about life from your parents normally and hopefully its enough to get you through it

Sometimes something happens and you go wow......I'm an adult and I still don't know what I'm doing ....like when you have a baby and they hand you a little bundle which can be frightening and a little daunting

What do you wish you had a better understanding of or more instructions growing up

Decorating is mine....I've never painted a door or a skirting board in my life

As for wallpaper...forget it

I worry that my kids will eventually own their own homes and say dad can you

Help with the decorating

Same here. I can literally make bridges move or robots dance but I couldn't wallpaper to save my life yet my dad was a self thought master. Also any form of gardening is beyond both of us, by the time we get the plants home they are already dead in the boot and my dad's house is like the botanic gardens

From my late twenties, I was saving for a house, then marraige then kids, then separation. It was always "whats next"

I wish someone drove home the auld "live in the now" chestnut a bit more.

Now its all about now and enjoying it.

Coming from a home where Dad always knew a lad... he actually was pretty useless... the Daddy’s Home scene where he pulls out the toolbox with some batteries a pliers and a tampon would be accurate for him... I went out and bought a readers digest for DIY... and would attempt stuff now... but it’s hard to have confidence when you’ve not been shown anything...

as for wall paper... the only thing I ever did was scrape it off walls... so I hate the stuff... should be banned...

Wallpapering and painting is easy and therapeutic. I'm self taught. I'm ok with small electrical and plumbing jobs which are also self taught.

Gardening isn't an issue but I'm useless with plant names and distinguishing between them.

I've raised 3 daughters so after that nothing is a problem.

After my house was built i had this great idea to save some money and paint it myself.

One bathroom ceiling later i said 'shite to this' and hired a painter.

I had no idea I could hate painting so much.

I even gave all the brushes I bought to the painter because I knew I will never use them again

I can build almost anything from steel or stone but can't hack painting

Hell no!

When my son was 5 years old he was crazy about astronomy

I have painted his room instead of putting a wallpaper! It saved my time, nerves and effect was amazing

I've promised myself never any wallpaper again

I have been at my friend's house, she has a sunroom as extension from the living room and the photo wallpaper is on the right side. Im jealous for her skills

Like a pro!

Oh God, money management has to be the big one

I did Home Ec in school so ok with cooking, nutrition, sewing hems etc but I think it should be a mandatory subject up to Junior Cert.

As for DIY, we've got YouTube now so it's all there if you want to learn

As someone else mentioned, mindfulness is a good one, living in the now, not worrying about the future, making a conscious decision to do things which make you happy. I'm getting better at it as I get older - Mrs

I do a lot of DIY but there's stuff that I wouldn't go near. Ceilingpapering is on of them. By the time I've the right equipment to do so I've probably spend the same amount than getting a pro. And it's gonna look fab!

Anyhow has anyone ever attempted plastering? It looks so easy when a pro is doing it but it immediately turns into a nightmare when you attempt it yourself.

Yeah diy being a tradesman is great as o the sites u always pick up tips and tricks just done panelling up the stairs as a nickser job done happy i can do stuff i am a plastering by trade

I’m the owner of a full tool kit including drill, router, sander. I do all diy in my house as hubby hasn’t a clue! My daddy taught me everything as I followed him around a lot. But he never taught me how to survive without him... that’s the only thing I’ve struggled with since he died.

Ah I've most of the Middle of Lidl in my garage and will attempt most small jobs, with a roughly 70% success rate but, when it comes to major jobs, I call the people who know what they're doing

Unless it's computer/electronic related, that's my curiosity and will get most of that sorted myself.

Oh! Cooking! That's all mine and if tomorrow is sunny, I'm lighting BBQ half time Wales v England

My auld lad was a mechanic. I've literally spent 1000s of hours working in that cold miserable garage wiping tools and holdin torches.

Now I wish i actually took an interest, or paid a smidgen of attention, because I never learned a single thing, and mechanics are damn expensive

I've no idea if it's a trend. I'm simply trying to keep the few features that my old house has and one of it was white embossed wallpaper on the ceiling in the living room. It gives it a bit of grandeur.

I didn't have that influence or guidance since the age of 12 so I'm self taught in a lot of things, and after many trials and errors I'm pretty self sufficient. Have a go anyway, you might surprise yourself.

My dad was fabulous. He taught me how hang wallpaper, lay tiles, change a plug, put up a new light fitting and most other things he thought I needed to know when I moved out. To be fair its saved me a fortune over the years I do all my own DIY and i love it
