Emojis use and over use.

Hi fabbers i briefly touched on this subject the other day in a thread where a person made a derogatory comment with no emoji after it. Are we getting to comfortabe with these and don't realise it. So this thread is for sharing ones thought on this subject, while also giving one another comments of all sorts with no emoji attached to them. See how many can do it, the objective here is to see if the whole thread can be without emogis, whilst having fun or not with the results.

Emojis put the intended emotion behind the comment.. Softens what may otherwise be a comment that woukd be misunderstood. They have there place but limited.. Gifs do a better job I think

Chatting one on one with someone you have the time and space to put your comments in context so there is less chance of it being misunderstood.

On a public forum with literally hundreds of people reading what you say it's impossible to contextualise your thoughts without explaining yourself everytime so while some people do overuse them they are a good way of showing intent if used correctly. There will always be those who pay no heed to any of that though and assume intent and are permanently offended.

Yes very true but it's the over use of them these days has made us rely on them to much. Just imagine a whole thread/messaging in general without them, it's trying determine comments then, are they picked up wrong, must more questions be asked to find out the persons mood etc.

I'd agree in part.. They're part of the fabric in terms of comments both here and on other places and they certainly help put a comment in context. It's not helping the art of writing and conversation.. A good mastery of the English language would probably mean you could get your point across in the manner it was intended without them but as I say.. They're par for the course and will be from here out.

I have found it happens in one to one as well, not knowing how to take comments without them. Of this this depends on how much you know the person/persons, let's presume here you don't then it can get awkward at times. I know most people do use them but sometimes without them leaves one wondering and words can be taken out of context or misunderstanding.

North West, Outer Letterkenny area

I've been in the situation where joking with someone by text. They got annoyed, It wasn't anything important and very clearly a joke. So I said it was a joke. Just goofing around silly reply. To which they replied but you never used a laughing emoji afterwards. As if this was the only way to signify a joke response. I was kind of shocked that it had come to that point where the use of an emoji is essential to some people to convey your message.

If there was one in the first place it wouldn't of come to that as the poster has said. This is what I am talking about here and guilty as i am myself using them. It's just an observation and what it has come to these days,if we reflect on the olden days when there was none. Times are just changing so fast and sometimes that short kind of txt of a few letters e.g FYI still baffles me also.

That was exactly my point. I didn't realise that an accompanying emoji was now almost essential.

Don't get me started on text speak.. Lolz and bants should be criminalised and purged from the English language. But look, emojis are a kind of full stop.. Characterises what you mean to say.. They're a take it of leave it option

In the olden days people would write jk (joking) to convey that they were joking. Or lol. Many people still do.

Exclaimations marks can be used too in some cases!

Jk? Olden days what olden days are they in my day we didn't even have phones and when they came in that sort of txt and emojis were unheard of until another good few years again. Or maybe i was just living under a rock and missed it all whilst it was developing.

Is "lol" classed as an emoji, I guess it is really so only two people used them so far but none of the face kinds yet.

Would you call that progressive regression?

Naas which is South West of Dublin

I think they probably are overused, and I’m sure I’m guilty of this but I find they add context to comments and help to ensure that comments are taken they way they were intended, otherwise it was CAPITALS, !!!!!’s or lol’s.

Hehe when I said olden days I meant emoji-less, text based communication - the dial up internet days!

lol has been around since dial up, I never really took to it, I prefer a good hahaha myself.

I don't think we rely on emojis, I think they just make text based communication a whole lot easier than it used to be!

I would i suppose would you? So far here without using them is sort of a strange feeling but i kind of like it somehow, once i don't slip up now.

Well we've, for the most part, agreed that life before emojis was more content as regards messaging so yeah, I guess I would say progress back to the old ways has been made.. It would be fascinating to be in a kik group where both emojis anf gifs were banned..considered prose and thoughtful composition would have to be used... (would add the l*l word but on a better path now)

In my opinion we replaced emojis with beautiful and long expression of our feelings.

Pre emojis era we have used kind of urban language when chatting to people (2006_2010) lol rotfl etc

Im addicted to some emojis on fab and I know sometimes over use them

Language is constantly evolving, it's a matter of opinion as to whether the change is progressive or regressive.

It does seem that emojis have become a necessity to soothe those tortured souls who wander the hallowed halls of the internet in an endless quest for umbrage.
